Guru Purnima holds great significance for Hindus as one of the most important occasions in Sanatan Dharma, commemorating the revered role of the Guru or teacher. Guru also refers to a spiritual mentor who makes our lives better and enlightens us with their teachings. The Guru guides us on the path of righteousness, illuminating the truth behind illusions and thoughts. Without their guidance, dispelling the darkness of confusion and ignorance becomes challenging.

On this auspicious day, people honour and worship their Gurus. According to Drik Panchang, Guru Purnima falls on the Full Moon Day (Purnima Tithi) in the month of Ashadha. This year, Guru Purnima is observed today, on July 21, 2024. Guru Purnima, alternatively known as Vyasa Purnima, is observed on the birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa, an author and prominent figure in the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

For Buddhists, it marks Bhagwan Buddha’s first sermon after enlightenment. In Jainism, it honours Bhagwan Mahavira, who accepted his first disciple, Gautam Swami, on this day.

According to Hindu mythology, Guru Purnima can be traced back to the birth of the sage Ved Vyasa, who is said to be the author of the Mahabharata and the Puranas. He divided the Vedas into four parts. That is why he is regarded as an old Guru, and this day is also observed as Vyas Purnima.

What to do on Guru Purnima?

-Begin the day early by seeking blessings from parents and elder siblings by touching their feet.

-After bathing, offer prayers to Bhagwan Surya.

-Worship Bhagwan Ganesha, the deity of knowledge and wisdom.

-Visit your Guru if you have one, express gratitude, and seek blessings by touching their feet.

-On this auspicious day, offer clothes, shoes, fruits, and dakshina to Brahmins and Gurus. Also, present sweets to your father.

-Chant Guru Mantra

Celebrating this day with rituals, prayers, and expressions of gratitude underscores the timeless wisdom imparted by Gurus who illuminate our paths with knowledge and virtue. May the observance of Guru Purnima foster unity, reverence, and deeper spiritual connection among communities worldwide, inspiring a journey towards enlightenment and inner peace.
