On the evening of Thursday, July 18, 2024, a violent disturbance erupted in the Harehills suburb of Leeds, located in Yorkshire, England. The confrontation began shortly after social services removed four children from a family of Eastern European descent, triggering widespread unrest in the area.

Visuals posted on social media captured the chaotic scenes of the riot. The footage showed a mob aggressively setting a bus on fire, overturning a police car, and smashing the windows of another police vehicle. The violence extended to attacks on the police officers present at the scene. Rioters hurled rocks and other projectiles at the officers, while one individual used a child’s scooter as a weapon, targeting the window of a police car.

Despite efforts by the police to de-escalate the situation, they were eventually forced to retreat from the area due to the intensity of the violence. The mob’s actions not only caused significant property damage but also placed the safety of the police officers at serious risk.

The unrest in Harehills stemmed from a recent intervention by social services, which involved removing four children from their family. This decision followed an incident where one of the children was hospitalised after being injured by a sibling. The incident was reported to the police, who subsequently informed social services.

On the evening of July 18, as social services workers attempted to execute the removal order, they encountered immediate resistance from the family and other local residents. The confrontation escalated rapidly, leading to the widespread violence observed in the footage.

The West Yorkshire Police addressed the incident in an official statement, describing the riot as being instigated by a “criminal minority” with the intent of inciting communal discord in Harehills. The police emphasised that they would pursue legal action against those responsible for the disorder. They assured the public that no injuries had been reported as a result of the violence and described the incident as a “serious public order issue.”

The statement also urged residents to refrain from speculating on the causes of the disorder, reinforcing their stance that the unrest was the work of a disruptive minority rather than a broader community issue. The police reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and to addressing the disturbances with the full force of the law.

Harehills has a documented history of violence and racial tensions. The suburb is known for its diverse immigrant population, including a significant number of people of Pakistani origin. This demographic diversity has occasionally been a source of friction, contributing to the area’s reputation for social unrest.
