In a horrifying incident, the Assam Police have arrested five individuals in connection with the gang rape of a minor girl in the Udalguri district. The arrested suspects have been identified as Mustaq Ahmed, Mohidul Islam, Hafijul Ali, Saddam Ali, and Ehsan Ahmed.

The incident occurred on the evening of June 22, when the minor girl, along with her friends, was returning from tuition in the Majbat area. According to reports, the arrested accused offered the girl a ride home but instead took her to a secluded brick kiln where they allegedly gang-raped her.

Pushkin Jain, Superintendent of Police, Udalguri, stated, “Following the incident, all our officers, including myself, began investigations on the ground. We have arrested all five accused from Majbat, Dhekiajuli, and Dalgaon areas. The victim has undergone a medical examination, and her condition is stable and safe.”

In response to the incident, Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah visited Udalguri on June 24 to assess the situation firsthand. Acting on the instructions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister Baruah engaged with local representatives, district administration, and the victim’s family. He assured them of the government’s full support and commitment to ensuring swift justice.

Minister Baruah conveyed his condolences and support via social media, stating, “On the instructions of Hon’ble CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, I reached Udalguri and took full stock of the inhuman incident that occurred on June 22. We promise full support for the victim’s swift recovery and justice, including the establishment of Fast Track Courts. The Udalguri police have arrested all five accused within 24 hours and legal proceedings are underway.”

Legal Framework

The accused have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. These legal provisions are crucial for addressing crimes against minors and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable. The matter came to light when the family members reached the Majbat PS to complain on June 23.

Following the FIR, police arrested all five of the accused, Mustaq Ahmed, Mohidul Islam, Hafizul Ali, Saddam Ali and Ehsan Ahmed in connection with the incident. They have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and POCSO, the police officials said.
