Jharkhand police in a significant operation has nabbed as many as seven Maoists from Latehar district on Monday, June 24. The arrested Maoists are all associated with Tritiye Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC), a splinter group of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist).
Those arrested were indulged in threatening local businessmen associated with brick kilns operating in separate places in Latehar district for levy extortion, informed police on Monday.
Briefing the media about the development, Superintendent of Police, Latehar, Anjani Anjan said that “We had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) after reports of criminals targeting brick-kilns under Latehar police station limits and adjoining areas had surfaced. Upon investigating, it has been revealed that Deepak Oraon and Islam Ansari who have been recently walked out of jail were indulged in reviving the TSPC outfit in the region.”
We have apprehended as many as seven people in connection with the case and have also recovered two weapons. It has been unveiled that the accused were especially targeting small businessmen who are associated with brick-kiln business for levy extortion. They were threatening the businessmen and forcibly shutting down their operations, added Sp Anjan.

It is noteworthy that this is not the only time that operatives of the Maoist outfits have been arrested on charges of levy extortion and recently the security forces have also arrested one of the notorious commander of the CPI Maoist group when he had arrived for levy extortion in Gumla district.
The arrest was made by a special team of Gumla police who raided the Jhalkapat area under the Ghaghra police station limits on June 9 and nabbed Sambhu Ganjhu alias Ravi Ganjhu,, zonal commander of the CPI Maoist.
The development occurred after the district police received credible input about the presence of group members of Chotu Kherwar, a regional commander of the outlaws in Kedali, Dirgaon, and Karasili villages of Jhalkapat area after which a QRT team was immediately dispatched to the location leading to arrest of Ganjhu.

Ganjhu, a resident of Humbi village within the Tandwa police station limits of Maoist-affected Chatra district was arrived in the area on the instruction of Kherwar and assigned with the task of levying extortion and recce of the area to harm police personnel, he was carrying a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head.

Founded in 2002 after splitting from Maoist Communist Centre of India (MCCI), which later merged with the People’s War Group to form CPI Maoist, TSPC is a Maoist outfit functional mainly in the state of Jharkhand.
The group has been on the forefront of illegal activities like levy extortion, halting development projects and unleashing violence against those who dare to disagree with the extremist ideology.
Recently armed cadres of the group had also killed as many as two people of the tribal community in Maoist-hit Chatra district of Jharkhand after alleging them for espionage.
The fateful incident took place on May 25 when dozens of armed cadres of TSPC barged into the house of Chedi Birhor and killed him along with his son Pankaj Birhor after labelling charges of espionage against the duo. The incident had sent shockwaves into the region as the deceased were quite outspoken against the Maoist outfit in the past.
