The world of Bollywood has seen its share of celebrities who have undergone significant personal transformations, including religious conversions. Over the decades, several notable figures from the film industry have chosen to convert from Islam to Hinduism. These conversions, often termed as “Ghar Wapsi”, have sparked curiosity and debate, reflecting the diverse and evolving cultural landscape of India.

Zubaida Begum, a leading actress in Bollywood’s first talkie film, “Alam Ara,” married Maharaj Narsingir Dhanrajgir of Hyderabad in the 1930s after her conversion to Hinduism.

Similarly, popular singer Shamshad Begum, known for hits like “Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar,” converted and married lawyer Ganpat Lal Battoo, marking a significant shift in her personal and professional life.

In the 1940s, actress Nazim Ali adopted the name Nirmala Devi after converting to Hinduism. She married actor Arun Kumar Ahuja, and together they had a son who would later become the renowned 1990s superstar Govinda.

In the early 1950s, rising star Zubieda concluded her acting career following her marriage to Maharaja Hanuwant Singh of Jodhpur. Their wedding ceremony adhered to Arya Samaj customs, marking a significant cultural and personal transition for Zubieda.

Roshan Ara Khan became Annapurna Devi and married music composer Ravi Shankar.

In 1958, Bollywood icon Nargis converted to Hinduism and wed actor Sunil Dutt. Known post-marriage as Nirmala Dutt, she remains celebrated as Nargis Dutt, one of the most iconic actresses of her era.

Zahida who played a few supporting characters in 1960s films, became Madhur and married musician Brij Bhushan. Her elder sister was 50s star Madhubala/Mumtaz Jehan, the second wife of singer Kishore Kumar.

Naqi Jehan, winner of Eve’s Weekly Miss India 1967, adopted the name Nandini Kamdar upon marrying businessman Vikram Kamdar.

Nayyara Mirza crowned Femina’s Miss India in 1967, adopted the name Nalini Patel after marrying and settling in the USA.

In the 1960s, Asha Parekh’s mother, Sudha Parekh, formerly known as Salma Bohra, converted to Hinduism and married Bachubhai Parekh.

Actress Sayeeda Khan married director Brij Sadanah and turned into Seema Sadanah. Their son Kamal Sadanah did a few successful films in the early 90s.

Ranjeet Bedi, famous for his villainous roles in the 1970s, is married to Aaloka Bedi, formerly known as Nazneen.

Jackie Shroff’s mother, originally named Hoorunissa, converted to Hinduism and took the name Rita Shroff after marrying his father.

Prabhu Deva’s first wife was Ramlath, a Muslim woman who converted upon marriage.

Mana Qadri married actor Suniel Shetty and converted to Hinduism. Now known as Mana Shetty. Her sister, Isha Qadri, has married a Hindu too.

Actress Khusboo Sundar was born as Nakhat Khan. She is married to director Sundar C.

Actress Lakshmi Priya, wife of P. Jayesh. She was born as Sabina Abdul Lateef.

The sons of singers Asha Bhonsle and Anuradha Paudwal, Hemant Bhonsle and Aditya Paudwal, are married to Muslim women. Hemant Bhonsle’s wife is Rama (formerly known as Sajidah), and Aditya Pondwal’s wife was Kavita (formerly known as Ambreen Akhoon).

Mandana Karimi, an Iranian actress, was initially known as Manizeh Karimi before marrying TV celebrity Gaurav Gupta.

TV actress Tasneem Sheikh became Tanisha Nerurkar and married Sameer Nerurkar. Shabnam Syed became Surbhi and married Saurabh Vanzara.

Bollywood celebrities’ conversions from Islam to Hinduism reflect personal journeys deeply influenced by cultural and familial ties.
