In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Assam police have seized a massive consignment of banned drugs valued at approximately Rs 66 crore. The operation, conducted in the Lamajuar area of Karimganj, resulted in the apprehension of three individuals in possession of 2,20,000 Yaba tablets. The operation unfolded that huge consignment of drug smuggling continues through the open border of Myanmar via states like Mizoram and Manipur. It is not the first instance of narcotics smuggling from Myanmar via Mizoram being seized in Assam. In recent times, security forces have seized many large consignments of drugs smuggled from Myanmar to other parts of India and, on a few occasions, to Bangladesh via Mizoram.

Acting on secret inputs, Cachar police launched a special operation along the inter-state border. The consignment, brought from a neighbouring state, was intercepted during the operation led by IGP STF Partha Sarthi Mahanta and Karimganj Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das.

During the meticulously planned operation, officials recovered the substantial haul of Yaba tablets concealed inside the backlights of an unnumbered Bolero Camper vehicle. The vehicle was traced back to Mizoram. The arrested drug smugglers, identified as Khairul Hussain, Nabir Hussain, and Man Mia, hail from Tripura.

IGP Partha Sarathi Mahanta commented on the successful operation, emphasising the relentless efforts of the police to combat drug trafficking in the region. “This seizure is a significant step towards curbing the menace of drug trafficking. We remain committed to eradicating such illegal activities from our state,” Mahanta said.

West Guwahati Police Department’s Major Seizure

In a related development, the West Guwahati Police Department (WGPD) team from Azara Police Station disrupted a significant narcotics supply chain reportedly active in the region, the team seized 19 cartons containing 1,956 bottles of banned Codeine Phosphate Syrup from a godown in the Hatkhuwapara area.

The consignment was reportedly on its way to Aizawl, Dimapur, and Agartala before being intercepted. Preliminary investigations revealed that the illicit shipment originated from Delhi. The operation underscores the increasing vigilance and effectiveness of Assam’s law enforcement agencies in combating drug trafficking.

These operations highlight the concerted efforts of Assam police to tackle the growing problem of drug trafficking in the state. The successful seizures and arrests not only disrupt the supply chains but also serve as a strong deterrent to those involved in such illegal activities.

Authorities have assured that further investigations are ongoing to uncover the broader network involved in these trafficking activities. The vigilance and proactive measures taken by the police are crucial in maintaining the safety and security of the region.
