In a significant development in Jharkhand, a Quick Response Team (QRT) of police apprehended a zonal commander of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist), said police on Sunday, June 9.

Acting on a tip-off, a special team of Gumla police raided the Jhalkapat area under the Ghaghra police station limits on June 9 and nabbed Sambhu Ganjhu alias Ravi Ganjhu,, zonal commander of the CPI Maoist.

The development occurred after the district police received credible input about the presence of group members of Chotu Kherwar, a regional commander of the outlaws in Kedali, Dirgaon, and Karasili villages of Jhalkapat area after which a QRT team was immediately dispatched to the location leading to arrest of Ganjhu.

Ganjhu, a resident of Humbi village within the Tandwa police station limits of Maoist-affected Chatra district was arrived in the area on the instruction of Kherwar and assigned with the task of levying extortion and recce of the area to harm police personnel. The security team also seized Naxal (Maoist) pamphlets from the possession of the accused.

After the arrest of Ganjhu, a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in the Ghaghra police station limits under section 17 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act (CLA). A number of cases against Ganjhu have already been pending in separate police station of the state, informed police in a series of tweets on social media platform X.

The operation was launched by a joint team of personnel from district police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) and Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ), a unit of the Jharkhand police specialising in counter-insurgency operations.

Notably, security forces in recent years have succeeded in containing the spread of the outlawed CPI Maoist and other splinter groups such as People Liberation Front of India (PLFI), and Tritiye Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) in the insurgency-hit state. This comes amidst continuous operations carried out by the security forces in regions such as Kolhan, Budha Pahada and Parasnath, range earlier considered as strongholds of Maoist.
