Nearly 600 people  mostly from the Meitei community in Jiribam area are now taking shelter in Assam’s Cachar district following fresh violence reported in Jiribam district, Assam Police official said. The Cachar district police has increased security along border areas by deploying adequate numbers of security personnel, and commandos as it shares the border with Manipur’s Jiribam.

Numal Mahatta, Superintendent of Police of Cachar district who visited Jirighat area under Lakhipur Sub-Division in Cachar district said that, nearly 600 people from Jiribam area are now taking shelter in Cachar district.
“We have beefed up security along the bordering areas of our side following the fresh violence erupted in Jiribam area in Manipur. We have deployed security personnel, special commando forces and they are patrolling in all bordering areas,” Numal Mahatta said.

“The locals who are peace-loving people are also cooperating with us. Nearly 600 people from Jiribam area have fled towards Assam and they are taking shelter in some of their relative’s places. We are monitoring the situation,” Numal Mahatta added.

The senior police officer further said that there is a peaceful environment on Assam’s side. “Everything is peaceful now and there is no report of any incident happened in Assam side. The local MLA has also called a meeting of peace committee at Lakhipur area. Our men are in their duties. We will take strong lawful action against those who will try to make disturbance in our side,” Numal Mahatta said.

The district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Manipur’s Jiribam district citing a likelihood of imminent danger to human lives and properties due to the ‘unlawful activities of some anti-social elements’, an official order said on June 6.

As per the order issued by the District Magistrate, due to the present prevailing situation, all the DLOs of Jiribam district are directed to keep vigil and safeguard respective government offices/properties to avoid any losses of important government properties and documents.

Further, it is also informed that section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973 has been enforced vide this office order dated June 6, 2024. (With Inputs from ANI)
