The gigantic absurdity of the EVM hack and form 17C conspiracy theories: An exposé on Congress’ baseless allegations

Amid the 2024 General Elections, the Congress party has propagated baseless conspiracy theories questioning the electoral process's integrity. Senior leaders like Kapil Sibal and Rahul Gandhi allege EVM hacking and Form 17C manipulation

As the 2024 General Election progresses, opposition parties, particularly the Congress, have churned out a cacophony of conspiracy theories, raising unfounded doubts about the integrity of the electoral process. Spearheaded by senior leaders like Kapil Sibal, Rahul Gandhi, and their cohorts, these allegations have veered into the fantastical realm, undermining the credibility of India’s robust democratic mechanisms. A closer examination of the logistics and numbers reveals why these theories are flawed and border the absurd.

Detailed Breakdown of the Election Process

  • Election Coverage: By the conclusion of the 6th phase, 486 parliamentary seats have seen voting or had their results declared.
  • Polling Stations: Each parliamentary seat encompasses thousands of polling stations, resulting in around 900,000 polling stations conducting voting.
  • Candidates and Polling Agents: Each constituency has around ten candidates, although the average is closer to 15.3. Each candidate can deploy up to three polling agents at every polling station.
  • Realistic Agent Deployment: Even if we assume that only the top three parties can afford comprehensive agent deployment, this results in three polling agents per station, amounting to 27 lakh (2.7 million) agents nationwide.

The Congress party’s allegations hinge on the notion that:

  • Form 17C Verification: Besides the candidates, over 27 lakh polling agents have meticulously verified every Form 17C provided by the Election Commission of India (ECI). This form records the total votes cast and details of the EVMs used.
  • Voter Observation: These agents have observed every voter, ensuring there are no discrepancies between the votes cast and the VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) slips. Astonishingly, not a single significant complaint about discrepancies has emerged.
  • Access to Voter Lists: Polling agents have precise access to the voters’ lists for each polling station and aggregated data at the constituency level.

According to the conspiracy theorists within the Congress party:

  • Massive Collusion: Over 27 lakh individuals, realistically approaching one crore (10 million), are supposedly conspiring with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP to defraud the election.
  • Lack of Concrete Evidence: Despite this alleged massive conspiracy, there is no tangible evidence indicating how this conspiracy is orchestrated or why polling agents from opposition parties like Congress and CPM would collaborate with the BJP.
  • Unrealistic Operational Secrecy: Maintaining such a vast, clandestine operation without leaks or whistleblowers is practically impossible.

The Congress party’s desperation becomes evident when considering the lack of substantive evidence backing their claims. The accusations appear to be a last-ditch effort to explain their anticipated electoral defeat rather than a legitimate concern about electoral integrity. By propagating these theories, Congress not only disrespects the democratic process but also undermines the public’s trust in the electoral system.

Comparing the current claims to historical conspiracy theories, the propositions put forth by Congress leaders such as Kapil Sibal, Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, and Prashant Bhushan are akin to the most outlandish and discredited theories in history. The sheer scale and improbability of the conspiracy they allege should place these figures among the ranks of the most notorious conspiracy theorists.

As the election draws to a close, it is crucial for all political parties, especially Congress, to respect the democratic process and the institutions that safeguard it.
