Agartala: The Government Railway Police (GRP) have arrested three Bangladeshi women and an Indian aide at the Agartala railway station for illegally entering Tripura on May 24. The arrests followed a specific tip-off received by the police.
Tapas Das, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the GRP Police Station, confirmed the arrests, stating, “Upon interrogation, it was revealed that the arrested individuals are Bangladeshi nationals who failed to produce any legitimate papers for their entry.”
OC Das provided further details on the operation, saying, “Acting on confidential intelligence, our plainclothes officers were deployed at the station. The suspects’ erratic behaviour and inconsistent responses upon questioning led to their arrest.”
The arrested individuals have been identified as Rozina Begum, Ruma Akhtar, Kakali Begum, and their Indian accomplice, Sukhlal Debnath. All four were taken into custody and have since admitted to their Bangladeshi citizenship during police interrogation.
In a related covert operation on May 22, the GRP also arrested two more individuals suspected of illegal entry. The detainees, identified as Nargis Akhtar and Mehdi Hasan, were apprehended at Agartala railway station. Their suspicious behaviour prompted the police to interrogate them. When asked to produce Indian citizenship documents, they failed to comply and subsequently confessed to being Bangladeshi citizens. The police have formally arrested them and initiated an investigation.
It should be mentioned that at least 41 Bangladeshi intruders have been arrested in Tripura in May 2024. Most of these Bangladeshi intruders were caught while trying to board a train to big Indian cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, etc. The infiltration from the neighbouring country to India has reached an alarming stage, as proved by the number of intruders arrested in the bordering state of Tripura in recent days.
These arrests highlight ongoing security concerns regarding illegal entry and the measures taken by the GRP to ensure the safety and integrity of the region. The operations underscore the importance of vigilance and intelligence in maintaining border security.
The GRP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding these illegal entries and is working to identify any further connections or networks facilitating such activities. The authorities urge the public to report any suspicious activities to help maintain security and order.
