Kanhaiya Kumar eclipses prospects for AAP and Congress in Delhi

North East Delhi emerges as a crucial battleground in the National Capital Territory of Delhi as the Lok Sabha election fervour intensifies. With the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Manoj Tiwari seeking re-election, the entry of Ti=ukde Tukdey gang leader Kanhaiya Kumar as the Congress candidate adds a new dimension to the electoral dynamics

North East Delhi is one of the important seats in National Capital Territory of Delhi. After formation of this seat this is going to be the fourth Lok Sabha election from the seat. The seat came into prominence in 2019 when sitting BJP MP Manoj Tiwari defeated three term elected Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit by huge margin of nearly 3.66 lakh votes. The seat has some special trends as in 2014 LS poll Manoj Tiwari won the seat by margin of 1.44 lakh by defeating Prof. Anand Kumar of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Sitting MP from the seat Jayprakash Agrawal came in third place in 2014. The vote share of the BJP on this seat in 2019 increased by 10.67 percent with respect to its 2014 vote percentage.

In this election, the Congress party has put Kanhaiya Kumar as its candidate for the seat. Kanhaiya Kumar lost the previous Lok Sabha election from Begusarai seat by a heavy margin of 4.22 lakh votes. He was interested in contesting from the seat again. But due to interference by Laloo Yadav family against Kanhaiya Kumar candidature from Begusarai, the Gandhi family forced Gandhi family to shift him to North East Delhi LS seat. The internal rivalry within the INDI Alliance is costing them dearly. Lalu Yadav doesn’t want any kind of challenge to his son Tejaswi Yadav within the alliance in Bihar. Kanhiya Kumar can pose a challenge to Tejaswi and so Kanhiya Kumar is shifted to Delhi. Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee president had also supported Lalu Yadav in his ousting Kanhiya Kumar mission as within the Congress party Kanhaiya Kumar posed a challenge to Akhilesh Singh too.

In Delhi, the AAP doesn’t want Kanhaiya Kumar to win the election. If Kanhaiya Kumar will win the election then Kanhaiya Kumar will question Arvind Kejriwala and AAP dispensation in Delhi. In Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee none of the leaders has such stature or massbase to question AAP or Arvind Kejriwal. This is the reason why in alliance with the AAP the Congress party got only 3 seats while the AAP got 4 seats to contest. Besides, the cadres of Congress party are not happy with the growing stature of Kanhiya Kumar within the party’s rank and file. The cadres of DPCC knew that if Kanhiya won the election then he would be the face of the party at their cost so DPCC cadres also did not take proper interest in winning the seat.

The BJP performance in Lok Sabha elections in Delhi had improved beyond imagination. The BJP won none of the seat in the 2009 LS election out of seven seats in Delhi. In 2004 the BJP won only one seat of South Delhi. But in 2014 the BJP won all the seven seats in Delhi defeating not only the Congress party but also the AAP. The BJP again won all the seats in 2019 but gained more than 50 percent of vote share on all the seven seats. The BJP improved its vote percent on all seven seats in Delhi in 2014 with respect to 2009 while in 2019 it improved its performance with respect to 2014 LS election. On all seven seats if we add the vote share of both the AAP and the Congress party of 2019 even then the BJP is winning all the seats by a comfortable margin.

The local politics of Delhi have changed completely due to the alliance between the AAP and the Congress party. If Sheila Dikshit were alive under no circumstances, she would permit this alliance. Virtually no cooperation exists between the cadres of the AAP and the Congress party in Delhi due to their animosity in Punjab. The leaders of their Punjab units were hurling political accusations at their lowest level. So the BJP is gaining a lot not only in Delhi but also in Punjab due to this unholy alliance between these parties. The voters of Delhi also know that this is only a time-specific alliance to befool and collect their vote.
