Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi

IIMC is a Government institute that has six campuses across the nation. The institute is solely dedicated to mass communication and therefore the facilities, faculty and curriculum focus on research-based studies that improve the quality of mass media studies. IIMC offers several courses ranging from PG diploma in Advertising and PR, Radio and TV Journalism, English, Hindi, Urdu Journalism and three regional languages. IIMC, which was declared a Deemed to be university earlier this year, also announced its first ever PG Degree (MA) Programmes from academic session 2024-25. It offers master’s programme in MA in Media Business Studies and Strategic Communication and the student can choose the one that caters to their interests. ­

AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Delhi

This institute comes under Jamia Millia Islamia University and is known for its unique courses like PG Diploma in Acting, Still Photography and Visual Communication, Broadcast Technology and Development Communication. To provide international exposure and expertise to the students, the Centre has also forged collaborative ties with the University of York, Toronto (Canada), University of Westminster, London(UK) and Sciences Po, Paris (France). The fee ranges from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh depending upon the chosen course.

Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication, Pune

This institute is ranked among the top media and communication colleges in the country, offering courses in MA (Mass Communication) and MBA (Communication Management). Their holistic pedagogy has honed the unique talents of generations of students, who have taken the media and communication industry to greater heights. The annual fees for the courses offered at Symbiosis range from Rs 30,000 to Rs 65,000.

Xavier Institute of Communication, Mumbai

Xaviers Institute of Communication offers Diploma and Certificate courses to students across Advertising, Marketing, Public and Corporate Relations, and other streams. The institute is an autonomous curricula unit that comes under St. Xavier’s College. The fee for all the courses offered here ranges between Rs 8,000 and Rs 346,500.

Xavier offers six specialisations in Post-Graduate Diploma programmes and eight kinds of Certificate programmes that include Advertising and Marketing Communication, Event Planning and Experiential Marketing along with traditional journalism courses.

Indian Institute of Journalism & New Media, Bangalore 

The offered courses at this college are developed in collaboration with Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, USA. Therefore, the curriculum is updated with all the latest developments in the field of Mass Media Studies. IIJNM offers diploma programmes in media fields at PG-level, which includes print, radio, television and multimedia journalism. The yearly fee for all three courses is Rs 4.5 lakh.

Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication, Bhopal

Named after the freedom fighter, poet, and journalist Makhan Lal Chaturvedi, this 32-year-old institution is India’s first university solely dedicated to journalism and mass communication. Its holistic approach towards journalism combined with practical training, prepares its students for a successful career in the media industry.

MCNUJC offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in journalism, mass communication, and related fields. Some of the distinctive programs that are offered are Honours programs in Electronic Media, Creative Writing, Mass Media, Multimedia, Graphics and Animation etc. Students interested in Research in Journalism can also take admission in courses that focus on academia. The annual fee for the PG diploma courses is 25k INR. Whereas, the fee for the UG programs ranges from 89.3 k – 2.4 LPA.

Department of Media and Communication, Pune

This Department comes under Savitribai Phule Pune University and is known for its unique PG Diploma in Indian Film Studies that is offered in online mode. This makes this course accessible for students who cannot travel due to some reason. The fee for this course is Rs 26,000. The department also offers an MSc in
Media and Communication Studies along with a PhD in the same field.

Manipal Institute of Communication, Karnataka

Its department is known for its technology-driven curriculum with courses like Digital Media, Filmmaking, and Media Convergence, equipping students with the skills to thrive in the digital age. Compared to some private media institutes, Manipal Institute offers a relatively budget-friendly option, making quality media education more accessible. The fees for the media courses at this institute start from Rs 55,000 for PG Diploma courses and Rs 4.5 lakh per annum for BA in Journalism.

Asian College of Journalism, Chennai

This institute offers a post-graduate diploma, along with specialisation in print, radio, new media and television studies. This college is known for its international faculty that provides the needed expertise and support to the students. The fee for all the courses offered here ranges between Rs 460,200 and Rs 708,000.

Department of Communication, Hyderabad

The Department of Communication at the University of Hyderabad offers a strong foundation to a student seeking a career in the field of Mass Communication. Its faculty is known for providing the needed hands-on training along with several workshops that help the media students with all the required experience in the field of Mass Communication. Students interested in research can also pursue PhD in Communication and choose to enter academia. The fee for MA Communication is Rs 17,400.
