In a major breakthrough for the Odisha police, a hardcore Maoist and Divisional Committee (DVC) member of the outlawed Communist Party of India Maoist (CPI Maoist) have surrendered before the officials on Tuesday, May 7.
DVC member of the Kandhamal-Kalahandi-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) division of the proscribed CPI Maoist, Samay Madakam alias Punit laid down arms before the police, informed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Southern Range, Odisha, Jai Narayan Pankaj.
The surrendered cadre was misguided by the outlaws at an early age of 10 years who was subsequently brainwashed and inducted in the outlawed outfit after two years. Upon joining the banned outfit Madkam donned many roles in the organisation and rose to the rank of DVC member of the KKBN divison of the outlaws, added IGP.
Madkam was working as the DVC member and at least fifteen cases are pending against him in various districts including of Boudh, Kandhamal and Nuapada. He was moved by the exploitation of the lower-rung cadres especially the sexual exploitation of women cadres in the outfit and hence decided to join the mainstream by shunning the path of violence, informed the official further.
Madkam was reported to be involved in detonating Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blasts and attacks on security personnel during the combing operation. He was also carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head announced by the State government as a DVC member.
Speaking with the media, Madkam said he had arrived here as a 10 years old from Chhattisgarh and soon got in touch with the Maoist. I moved with them for nearly two years after which I was recruited in the outfit in 2008.
I lost my path in the childhood but now want to spend the remaining part of my life with my family, doing farming and leading a life of dignity in the mainstream, added Madkam while asserting that exploitation has increased in the banned Maoist outfit.
Notably a number of Maoist cadres have laid down their weapons before the authorities, citing discrimination and disgruntlement with the Maoist ideology lately, this includes mass surrender of over 60 Maoist cadres in the neighboring State of Chhattisgarh in the last month alone.
