In Tamil Nadu, crimes under the influence of Ganja and synthetic drugs are increasing if the media reports are any pointer. On April 24, Desingu Raja, a 46-year-old resident of Thideer Nagar in the Kasimedu fishing harbour area of Chennai, was brutally murdered. Raja, who had previously faced charges of murder and attempted murder but had been leading a reformed life for the past seven years, fell victim to a violent attack while sitting on a street corner near his house.

Eyewitnesses reported that a gang of four arrived in an autorickshaw and launched a sudden assault on Raja, who was seated on an easy chair. They viciously slashed his neck with a knife before fleeing the scene. Despite efforts to save him, Raja succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

Following the tragic incident, Raja’s mother accused the police of turning a blind eye to illegal activities such as the sale of marijuana, narcotic pills, and liquor in the area. She alleged that Raja had exposed these illicit practices and had become a target as a result.

On April 25, three armed youths armed with machetes launched a brutal attack in Thirumullaivoyal near Chennai, leaving at least 12 individuals injured. Identified as Abinesh, Vishnu, and Muthu, all AC mechanics by profession, the trio, known for their history of criminal activities, would often congregate outside their housing quarters after reportedly smoking Ganja, where they would harass women with lewd comments.

The violence erupted when Seethalakhmi confronted the group after enduring their taunts. A quarrel ensued, during which her son came to her defense. In response, the gang attacked them with machetes. Despite the commotion, the gang continued their rampage, assaulting two more individuals, Chandralekha and her son Vijay, before attacking eight more people on the road.

Police swiftly responded to the scene, managing to apprehend Abinesh and Vishnu. However, Muthu remains at large, prompting a search operation by law enforcement authorities.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Amir Sultan, hailing from SP Pattinam in Ramanathapuram district, was found managing a shrimp farm on leased land in Vengangudi near Mimisal, Pudukkottai district. Trichy Customs Intelligence Unit officials, acting on a tip-off, discovered a significant quantity of cannabis oil (hashish) and cannabis, totaling 100 kg and 876 kg, respectively, intended for smuggling to Sri Lanka from this farm on March 10, 2024.

Further investigation revealed that the farm was operating on government land without authorization. Subsequently, law enforcement officers and police demolished the warehouse storing the drugs and disconnected the power supply to the shrimp farm. The owner, who had been absconding, was recently apprehended by authorities

The same day, at Chennai airport, customs officials intercepted 3.5 kg of illicit drugs, specifically cocaine, valued at Rs 35 crore. The contraband was smuggled by a Cambodian traveler who arrived via an Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital. Acting on suspicions, customs officials singled out the passenger for questioning upon landing, leading to the discovery of the cocaine parcel during a search of his belongings. An investigation has been launched into the involvement of the Cambodian traveler in the smuggling operation.

Law enforcement in Chennai made significant strides in curbing drug-related activities on April 25, detaining a taxi driver accused of catering to part-time IT workers by peddling Ganja. Alongside, they apprehended a young woman allegedly involved in possessing 1.3 kilograms of Ganja. Authorities discovered a scale used to measure drugs in her apartment, indicating her involvement in the illicit trade. She reportedly targeted IT professionals, luring them into purchasing the substance. Both individuals, identified as Suresh and Sharmila, were arrested on charges of Ganja smuggling and possession, respectively. They were presented before the court for further legal proceedings.

In separate incidents in Chennai and Virudhachalam, the perils of drug abuse were starkly evident. Two youths were discovered lying unconscious on the roadside in Adyar, believed to have consumed drugs. Despite police attempts to rouse them, they fled upon the arrival of an ambulance. Meanwhile, in Virudhachalam, a bus conductor fell victim to a vicious assault by an intoxicated youth. The alarming trend extended to Madurai, where Khan Mohammad, on his way home from work, encountered a group of Ganja-intoxicated youths. A confrontation ensued, resulting in a brutal attack on Mohammad, who was pelted with stones and subjected to severe assault.

On April 25, a bus conductor faced a vicious assault by an intoxicated youth in the Virudhachalam region. In Madurai, one Khan Mohammad encountered a group of ganja-intoxicated youths while riding his two-wheeler home after work. An altercation ensued, leading Khan Mohammad to confront them. In response, the enraged youths launched a violent attack on him, pelting him with stones and subjecting him to a brutal assault.

The access to drugs in TN under the DMK Govt is becoming easier like never before as peddlers are given plum posts in DMK, making law enforcement a joke.

In another viral video on social media, a man was seen recklessly dancing while intoxicated and speeding on his two-wheeler in the Pallikaranai area. He barely sat on the seat, preferring to sing, dance, and perform comical gestures while navigating city streets during peak hours without wearing a helmet. Fellow commuters recorded the incident and shared it across social media platforms.

In a blow to the DMK party’s integrity, a union councillor from Alangulam, and husband of DMK District Panchayat President Subash Chandra Bose, faced dismissal from the party ranks. His arrest for smuggling approximately 600 kilograms of Gutka products from Bangalore, intended for sale to children in Tenkasi, prompted his expulsion.

In another incident, during the 2024 parliamentary election voting on April 19, Shanti provided food to officials at the polling station overnight. Allegedly, the DMK district councillor, Rajiv Gandhi, physically assaulted Shanti and verbally abused her, accusing her of taking the food he had purchased. Witnesses reported that later that evening, in an inebriated state, Rajiv Gandhi returned to the polling station, assaulted Shanti again, dragging her by her hair and kicking her in the stomach. This caused Shanti to faint from the pain, necessitating her admission to Villupuram Government Medical College Hospital. Following Shanti’s complaint, the police investigated and arrested Rajiv Gandhi, who absconded, evading authorities.

Annamalai has expressed condemnation towards the issue and urged for stern action against the DMK official through his official X handle, “In Villupuram district, on April 19, the last day of parliamentary elections, DMK official Rajiv Gandhi brutally assaulted the female village administration officer, sister Mrs Shanti by slapping her on the cheek and kicking her in the stomach. Strongly reprehensible.

During the parliamentary election campaign, DMK executive Rajiv Gandhi carried out such a cruel attack due to refusing to file a false complaint against the Pattali Makkal Katchi brothers, allegedly violating the election campaign rules. Chief Minister Stalin went from street to street apologising before coming to power but did not reprimand his party men even in the slightest rebuke after coming to power, which is responsible for DMK’s continuous anarchy against government officials, especially women officials. It seems that the police have arrested DMK executive Rajiv Gandhi, who kicked and assaulted a female village officer. I urge you to take appropriate action against him.”

Following a viral video featuring Ahimsa, a student in UKG at Mogappair Primary School emerged, revealing her distress over the school’s condition, including litter strewn about and broken slabs in classrooms.

Ramya Bala, Ahimsa’s mother, explained that the video was shared after her daughter expressed distress regarding the broken slabs in her Mogappair Primary School’s premises, which was used as a polling booth during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections; the child’s parents, the school committee chairman, and an educational activist were purportedly threatened by officials and the 92nd ward Congress councillor KV Thilagar for exposing the matter.
