Women-driven startups in India are making a significant impact on climate change. These startups are leading the position for a greener and healthier future in India and providing employment to numerous people at the same time.

Particularly through initiatives like the Startup India programme, which was introduced in 2016, India has witnessed a transformative wave in entrepreneurship under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This has played a major role in enhancing a conducive ecosystem for startups in India. Today, there are over one lakh startups in India because of this flagship initiative. Other than men-led, women-led startups are also making a difference. These women entrepreneurs are not just coming up with new ways to fight climate change; they’re also empowering local communities. As climate change becomes more obvious, especially in countries like India, these startups come to the forefront when it comes to solving environmental issues and making a true difference.

In this context, let us explore some impactful startups led by women entrepreneurs that aim to drive changes in India’s climate and sustainability landscape.

Founded by Nivedha RM in 2016, TrashCon is a Pune-based startup that aims to tackle the issue related to waste management. They have created a special system in which mixed waste is turned into compost, which helps reduce harmful emissions and promotes better waste disposal. This waste does not go to landfills, reduces harmful methane gases, and promotes better ways to deal with waste.

Waste Ventures India, which was founded by Mani Vajipey in 2012, is a social enterprise that is working to find better ways to deal with waste. They work with Pan India by collaborating with local Governments, businesses, and communities to manage waste more efficiently. Waste Ventures India doesn’t just collect and sort waste; they also manage the recycling and reusing of waste. They teach people about sorting waste at the beginning, promote composting, and team up with others to recycle responsibly.

Greenway Grameen Infra is on a mission to provide clean cooking solutions to rural households. It was co-founded by Neha Juneja and Ankit Mathur in 2015. The startup provides low-cost and effective cookstoves that use biomass. These stoves help in reducing indoor air pollution and old cooking methods. By encouraging clean energy in rural areas, Greenway Grameen Infra is making people healthier, reducing the cutting of trees, and lessening harmful carbon emissions.

Founded by Natasha Tuli in 2018, GoNative, is an e-commerce platform that curates and sells sustainable, eco-friendly, and ethically sourced products. GoNative sells natural skincare and handmade home decor. It encourages people to shop thoughtfully. They support small artisans and eco-friendly brands, and urge its customers to choose products that are good for the environment. GoNative teamed up with women artisans from rural Tamil Nadu and helped them showcase their eco-friendly crafts.

Skymet Weather Services, co-founded by Jatin Singh and Priya Singh in 2003, gives accurate and local weather forecasts pan India. They use the latest technology, such as satellite pictures and data analysis, to predict the weather in great detail. Skymet’s forecasts are beneficial for farmers, businesses as well as Government leaders. They help farmers plan their crops better, be proactive for any disasters, and build resilience to changing weather.

Taru Naturals is another startup that focuses on using eco-friendly materials and ethical practices. It was founded by Namrata Kothari. They make trendy clothes and accessories while caring for the environment. Their aim is to reduce the impact of the fashion industry on the environment thus, they promote eco-friendly fashion and raise awareness about how clothing production affects our planet.

Another startup that concentrates on solar-powered is Svadha Energy, which was founded by Aishwarya Sudhir. They make products like solar street lights and portable lanterns not only for cities but for villages as well. These solar solutions give people clean energy and help communities become more self-reliant. Svadha Energy’s solar lanterns in Uttar Pradesh villages have replaced old kerosene lamps. This makes the lighting better and cuts down on indoor air pollution.

The Indian startups exemplify the spirit of innovation and resilience in the fight against climate change. With smart business ideas and strong leadership, such startups are not only helping the environment, but are also empowering the Indian communities to adopt eco-friendly culture. As these startups keep growing, they’re like guiding lights, sparking hope and making India’s future greener and better.
