Katchatheevu Island Row: S Jaishankar hits out at DMK for adopting double standards

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told Thiruvananthapuram that Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) adopts double standards in the Katchatheevu issue. The then DMK Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had supported Indira Gandhi in this regard. S Jaishankar reminded that a DMK Chief Minister was ruling Tamil Nadu when Katchatheevu was handed over to Sri Lanka, and he supported the move secretly. But, at the same time, he opposed the move to hand over Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka for the sake of ‘public consumption’. What DMK says is entirely different from what documents speak out. He says that since the matter is before the Court, he does not go explicit about his Government’s stand at the moment.

The Minister was speaking during the election campaign for Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who is a contestant from the Thiruvananthapuram parliamentary constituency.

The External Affairs Minister said that the former External Affairs Minister may say a lot about the issue, but it is not necessarily correct. However, the people of Tamil Nadu should know the truth.

S Jaishankar added that Bharat’s foreign relations are strong. Warm relations with the Gulf countries are significant. Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister to visit the UAE after Indira Gandhi. PM Modi succeeded in bringing the Bharatiya citizens, who were stuck on the battle fronts due to Covid 19, back to the motherland. Now, our people go abroad with utmost confidence. Even ordinary people who go abroad are taken care of by the Government. More Passport Seva Kendras have been opened.

The External Affairs Minister made it clear that the imminent Lok Sabha election is about making Bharat a developed country. He told the people of Thiruvananthapuram that those changes would also be reflected in Thiruvananthapuram.

Thousands of people lined up on either side of the road during the road show to greet the industrious Minister of External Affairs and dynamic Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the BJP candidate in Thiruvananthapuram parliamentary constituency. The enthusiasm of the people evidenced the bright chance for the BJP candidate. This is true in the wake of the conditions of the opponents Rajeev Chandrasekhar faces there.

Reports from Thiruvananthapuram say that sitting MP Sasi Tharoor (Congress) sweats a lot. First of all, even though the voters gave him three consecutive terms, they did not get anything they expected from an MP. Poor state of roads, water supply and infrastructure, etc., proves that he has not done any significant service to the people who voted him to Lok Sabha. It is despite the fact that he was Union Minister during his first term. Moreover, Congress leaders are leaving, day by day, the party they worked for several decades together. Naturally, he suffers a poor manpower.

Then comes Pannyan Raveendran, a prominent CPI leader. Even though he represented the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency, when CPI was a constituent of the Congress-led union Government apparatus, he had not delivered the goods properly too. Moreover political observers report that since he belongs to CPI, the junior partner in the CPM-led ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), he would not get the support of big brother CPM which it (CPM) extends to their own candidates.

Moreover, the blatant appeasement vote bank politics of both LDF and the Opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is a valid reason for the traditional LDF and UDF voters to vote for BJP this time. The voters see Rajeev Chandrasekhar as a candidate with vision. He told the voters what his designs were for Thiruvananthapuram. His background as a successful businessman, an excellent MP and as an exemplary Union Minister make him the most suitable candidate. Unparalleled corruption in the State Government and poor law and order situation in the State come in Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s advantage.
