In a recent turn of events at the Government Industrial Training Institute in Kollam, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) made headlines by attempting to obstruct BJP leader G. Krishnakumar, also the NDA candidate from the Kollam parliamentary constituency, from addressing the students on March 27, 2024.

Upon arrival at the ITI premises around noon, G. Krishnakumar, accompanied by his party colleagues, faced resistance from SFI members who vocally protested against what they deemed as BJP propaganda within the campus grounds.

However, undeterred by the opposition, Krishnakumar and his team pressed forward. He condemned the efforts of the SFI to disrupt his election campaign and proceeded to take to the dais, addressing both students and faculty as initially planned.

During his address, Krishnakumar emphasised the futility of resorting to violence as a means of resolution and urged students to adopt a peaceful approach in dealing with differences. Expressing bewilderment at the animosity displayed towards him despite maintaining amicable relations with fellow candidates, he criticised the SFI’s selective tolerance, citing their embrace of figures like Che Guevara and Mao Tse-Tung while hindering his campaign efforts in his own homeland.

Following the event, Krishnakumar conveyed his sentiments to the media, highlighting the concerning trend of using educational institutions as battlegrounds for political agendas. He condemned the actions of SFI members as representative of a culture of violent politics within campus environments and advocated for constructive political discourse instead.

Krishnakumar further underscored the importance of fostering unity among students, citing his own interactions with rival candidates as evidence of amicable relations within the political sphere. He questioned the basis of hostility among students when political adversaries could break bread together without animosity.

In the aftermath of the incident, observers have drawn attention to two significant implications. Firstly, the actions of the SFI have reignited debates surrounding their alleged intolerance and authoritarian tactics. Secondly, critics have pointed to what they perceive as a tacit alliance between the CPM and Congress, as evidenced by the SFI’s selective opposition, suggesting a larger pattern within Indian politics.

The incident at Kollam ITI serves as a stark reminder of the complexities inherent in student politics and the broader socio-political landscape, prompting renewed discussions on the role of ideological differences in shaping campus dynamics.
