Holi is a vibrant festival of colours and is celebrated with passion and enthusiasm across India. However, in Banaras ( also known as Varanasi), the festivities take on a unique and sacred tradition of Masan Holi, where Holi is played with pyre ashes. This tradition during Holi implies a deep-rooted religious and cultural importance that intertwines the celebration of colours with spiritual reverence. Today, let us delve into the significance of Masan Holi Varanasi by learning about its origins, rituals, and the profound symbolism that it carries for the people of Banaras. If you are wondering Masal Holi kab hai? The Masan Holi date is March 25, 2024.

Origin of Masan Holi

The traditions of Masan Holi originated in the rich tapestry of Banaras’ cultural and religious heritage. Banaras, being one of the oldest living cities, is deeply rooted in mythology and spirituality. The god of destruction and regeneration, Bhagwan Shiva, is associated with Varanasi, which adds a mystical aura to its traditions and rituals.

According to legend, the practice of playing Holi with pyre ashes in Banaras is rooted in the story of Holika mata, who was the sister of Hiranyakashipu (demon king). In the ancient scriptures, it is clearly narrated that Holika attempted to burn Prahlad, a devout follower of Bhagwan Vishnu, by sitting on a pyre with him. However, due to the unwavering faith and devotion of Bhakt Prahlad, he emerged unharmed while Holika perished in the flames. Since then, Holi symbolises the victory of good over evil.

The ritual of Masan Holi Varanasi is believed to celebrate this mythological event with the pyre ashes. This not only represents the defeat of evil forces and the purification of the soul, but also the triumph of innocence over arrogance. Here, the colors of Holi are infused with deeper spiritual meaning.

Masan Holi Significance (Playing Holi with Pyre Ashes)

Masan Holi 2024 holds profound significance for the people of Banaras as it reflects on their cultural identity and spiritual character. The use of pyre ashes in Masan Holi Varanasi symbolises the shortness of life and the cyclical nature of a person’s existence in this materialistic world. Just as the flames of the pyre consume the mortal remains, Holi with pyre ashes acts as a reminder of the birth and death eternal cycle.

Moreover, it is believed that the ashes used in Masan Holi possess purifying properties that cleanse the body, mind, and soul of impurities. By smearing each other with ash during Holi, people seek spiritual rejuvenation and internal purification.

Not only this, Masan Holi 2024 also fosters a sense of communal harmony and unity among the residents of Banaras. People come together and partake in festivities, regardless of their caste, creed, or social status. The celebration goes beyond barriers and unites individuals in a collective expression of joy along with devotion.

What happens in Masan Holi 2024?

Particularly at Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats, where cremations take place round the clock, people of Varanasi and pilgrims from various places gather at the ghats of Banaras on the day of Masan Holi. The ashes from the previous day’s funeral pyres are collected and mixed with water to make a paste, which is then applied to the faces and bodies of people.

While applying the paste of ashes, chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and devotional songs dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva are accompanied. The atmosphere is infused with respect and introspection as people immerse themselves in the spiritual ambience of Masan Holi.

Masan Holi Varanasi offers a profound insight into the multifaceted nature of Holi beyond its vibrant colours and festive celebration. It embodies the synthesis of spirituality, tradition, and cultural heritage and reflects the timeless wisdom that is embedded in the Hindu rituals. As Masan Holi 2024 approaches, let us delve deeper into its significance and embrace the spiritual journey it offers amidst the sacred ghats of Banaras
