The Indian Army has raised a Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG) as an elite unit to undertake research and evaluate futuristic communication technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, 5G, 6G and machine learning along with quantum technologies and the like for military applications.
“Communications are an important component of military operations. In fast evolving technologies for the battlefield, the side with better communications and ability to connect various constituents for information sharing will always have an edge over adversaries, an officer familiar with the matter said.
In the context of modern warfare, effective communication is paramount for operational success and army officials emphasize that the side with superior communication technologies and ability to connect various streams for information sharing will have a strategic advantage. STEAG establishment reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to imbibe advancements in technology to enhance its capabilities in the digital domain and ensure seamless communication support during operations.
Headed by a Colonel rank officer, STEAG will be the nursery for nurturing a developing tailored technologies spanning the complete spectrum of wired and wireless systems to include electronic exchanges, mobile communications, software defined radios, electronic warfare system, 5G and 6G networks, quantum technologies along with AI and Machine Learning.
“It will be the first of its kind unit to be equipped with the capability to harness niche technology, leverage cutting edge solutions and identifiable suitable cases for defence applications by fostering collaboration and partnership with academia and industry,” the officer said.
STEAG will be carrying out technical scouting, evaluation, development, management of core ICT solutions and provide user interface support by maintaining and upgradation of contemporary technologies available in the environment. “It will help bridge the divide between Indian Armed Forces on one hand and the industry and academia on the other hand,” he said.
It explores advance technologies like AI, 5G, 6G for defence. It customises wired and wireless systems, collaborates with academia and industry and supports network centric warfare with predictive analytics, enhancing operational efficacy for future battle grounds. STEAG, led by a Colonel pioneers advance technologies evaluation and adoption emphasising seamless communications, core ICT solutions and academia-industry collaboration for battlefield supremacy.
Officials believe that STEAG will play a crucial role in fostering self-reliance in high end communications technologies. which have traditionally been dominated by countries with advanced economies and research ecosystems. The establishment of this Centre of Excellence is expected to be a game-changer in India’s quest for technological self-sufficiency.
