Guwahati: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has unveiled the highly anticipated schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, outlining a comprehensive plan for key northeastern states. Led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, the ECI aims to ensure a smooth and transparent electoral process, reflecting the democratic ethos of the nation.

Trouble Hit Manipur

In Manipur, a state grappling with persistent challenges, the Lok Sabha elections will unfold in two phases. Phase 1, scheduled for April 19, will see voters from crucial districts like Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching, and more exercising their democratic rights. Moving forward to April 26, Phase 2 will witness voters in districts such as Jiribam, Pherzawl, Tamenglong, and Noney participating in the electoral process, highlighting the significance of regional representation.

3 Phases in Assam

Meanwhile, Assam, with its diverse cultural landscape, will witness a three-phase election spread across April 19, April 26, and May 7. Notably, the first phase coincides closely with the celebration of Rongali Bihu, underscoring the cultural vibrancy of the region. Assam, boasting 14 Lok Sabha seats, holds the highest number of parliamentary constituencies among the northeastern states, signifying its political significance in the national landscape.

Arunachal Assembly Polls

In Arunachal Pradesh, the electoral focus will be on the single-phase Assembly elections scheduled for April 19. This crucial event will determine the composition of the 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, with vote counting slated for June 4. Notably, the Assembly polls will run concurrently with the Lok Sabha elections for the two parliamentary constituencies of Arunachal East and Arunachal West, emphasising the integration of local and national democratic processes.

Single Phase in 3 States

Moving further, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Nagaland are gearing up for single-phase elections on April 19. While Mizoram and Nagaland each have one Lok Sabha seat, Meghalaya boasts two parliamentary constituencies, namely Shillong and Tura, highlighting the diverse electoral landscape of the region.

Two Phases in Tripura

Lastly, in Tripura, the electoral process will unfold over two phases on April 19 and April 26, emphasising the importance of ensuring a smooth and efficient voting process in the state.

As the nation prepares for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024, the Election Commission of India remains committed to upholding the principles of transparency, fairness, and inclusivity, thereby fostering a vibrant democratic process that reflects the will of the people.
