Imphal: In the  latest development in the troubled state on the evening of February 27, 2024, the Manipur Police Department strongly condemned the life-threatening attack orchestrated by militants. The Arambai Tengol  group is in question for the attack on police . In a statement, Manipur police stated, “The targets included Additional Superintendent of Police (Ops), Imphal West, Moirangthem Amit Singh, along with other officers. The assailants not only threatened the officers but also targeted Singh’s family, causing damage to their property. The situation escalated to the abduction and assault of the Additional SP, ultimately released due to the timely intervention of the Manipur Police.”

Addressing the incident, the Manipur Police, through a press release, expressed concern about the spread of misinformation on various platforms, including social media. The incident was revealed to be preceded by the theft of two Ambassador cars from the Government Oil Depot at North AOC. Officials, including Moirangthem Amit Singh and Inspector P. Achouba Meitei, intercepted the stolen vehicles and apprehended a suspect, leading to the subsequent attack by militant group members.

The Manipur Police Department is actively working to restore law and order in the state. They issued a plea for public cooperation, urging citizens to refrain from spreading rumours and fake news. The press release stated, “The Manipur Police, a neutral force, is dedicated to safeguarding the lives and properties of the public, and is not biassed towards or against any community.”

It should be mentioned that the Arambai Tengol group, known for engaging in anti-social activities, assaults, and vehicle snatching, has also been implicated in extorting money from the public and businessmen. The police emphasised the need for the public to be cautious of fake messages and social media posts that aim to create disharmony in the state.

Responding to the attack, a combined force of Manipur Police conducted an extensive area domination drive on 28/02/2024, led by SPs of violence hit 6 districts in the hills and valey. The police warned that any attempts to target officers or units via social media would be prosecuted, emphasising their commitment to taking stringent action against such incidents.

With the Manipur Police under attack, the possibility of calling in the Army and other Central forces looms large. Combing operations will continue, and those responsible for criminal activities will not be spared. The public is encouraged to cooperate with the police in their efforts to restore peace and tranquillity to the state.

In a parallel development, the Manipur Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Government of India to abrogate the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact with all Kuki-Zo UG group militants. The Speaker, Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, appealed to the government to nullify the agreement, signalling a shift in the state’s approach towards tackling militancy. Singh stated during the Assembly session, “This house unanimously resolved to urge the Government of India to abrogate the suspension of operations (SoO) with all the Kuki militants groups.” The move reflects the growing concern and determination to address security challenges in Manipur.
