Lok Sabha Polls 2024: Assam BJP announces seat-sharing; CM Sarma exudes confidence in winning 11 out of 14 Seats

Guwahati: In a pivotal move, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to contest in 11 out of 14 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Assam. This strategic announcement, made during a press briefing at the state BJP headquarters in Guwahati, solidifies the party’s position and sets the stage for a fierce electoral battle.

As CM Sarma outlined the party’s readiness, it was revealed that a list of candidates for the Lok Sabha polls has been finalised, with discussions set to take place in New Delhi today. The BJP’s decision to leave two seats for its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for Barpeta and Dhubri, and one seat for the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) in Kokrajhar, underscores the importance of fostering strong regional alliances.

The political landscape in Assam witnessed another notable development as Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Working President Rana Goswami joined the saffron party in the presence of CM Sarma and the state party president. Goswami’s defection marks the third high-profile switch from the Congress to the BJP in the last two weeks, following the footsteps of two Congress MLAs, Kamalakhya Dey Purukayatha, and former minister Basanta Das.

CM Sarma, addressing these defections, foresees a trend continuing, with more Congress members expected to join the BJP in the coming years. He predicted a regionalization of the Congress party after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections due to the absence of central leadership capable of guiding the party.

The political discourse in Assam is further heightened by the impact of the Bharat Jido Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi. CM Sarma asserts that the Yatra, which clashed with the national celebration of the Pran Pratistha of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, worked in favour of the BJP. CM Sarma criticised Gandhi for intentionally boycotting the significant occasion, stating that it not only offended Ram Bhakts but also caused displeasure among his own party members.

Delving into the internal dynamics of the BJP, CM Sarma highlighted the accessibility and equality ingrained in the party’s approach to governance. He emphasised the BJP’s commitment to treating all members equally, regardless of their position or stature. In contrast, CM Sarma recounted his 22 years in the Congress, where the prospect of dining with leaders like Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi was beyond imagination, reflecting on the hierarchical nature of the Congress party structure.

Adding another dimension to the narrative, CM Sarma underscored the inclusivity and egalitarian principles of the BJP. Personal anecdotes from a national conference in Odisha highlighted instances where ministers and karyakartas dined together, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi present, embodying the essence of the BJP’s culture.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s strategic announcement for the Lok Sabha elections in Assam, coupled with key defections and alliances, sets the stage for a gripping political saga. The BJP positions itself strategically, while defections from the Congress underscore a shifting political landscape. The influence of the Bharat Jido Yatra and CM Sarma’s reflections on the BJP’s internal dynamics add layers to the unfolding narrative, with Narendra Modi’s leadership woven into the fabric of the party’s ethos and vision for Assam’s political future.
