Imphal: In a dramatic turn of events, the Imphal West police commandos have surrendered their arms in protest against the recent armed militant attack on Moirangthem Amit, Additional SP (Ops) of Imphal West, Manipur. Demanding a free hand to retaliate, the police commandos express their frustration amidst escalating violence in the state.

The turmoil unfolded within the last 24 hours, marked by sporadic incidents of firing and the gathering of protesters in Imphal East. Over 200 armed miscreants reportedly stormed the residence of Additional SP, Moirangthem Amit, abducting him and his escort. Fortunately, he was rescued and is currently undergoing treatment in a local hospital.

Security forces swiftly responded to the situation by requisitioning and deploying four columns of the Assam Rifles in the affected area. Notably, the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act is not applicable in valley areas, adding complexity to the security measures.

Intensive search operations were conducted in both hill and valley districts, leading to the recovery of various weapons and explosives, including a 7.65mm pistol, an 8mm Bolt action rifle, a 9mm CMG with Mag, 2-inch mortar shells, bombs, hand grenades, and a Rs Motorola from Imphal East district.

The armed miscreants, numbering around 200, targeted the residence of Additional SP Moirangthem Amit, causing significant damage to property. In response, additional security forces rushed to the scene, resulting in police action. Unfortunately, two individuals, Rabinash Moirangthem and Kangujam Bhimsen, sustained injuries and were admitted to JNIMS Hospital, Porompat.

Amidst the chaos, the armed miscreants abducted the Additional SP and one of his escorts, later releasing them after intervention in Kwakeithel Konjeng Leikai area. Both were admitted to Raj Medicity for medical treatment. An investigation has been initiated, with a case registered in connection to the incident.

The surrender of arms by the Imphal West police commandos underscores their demand for a more assertive response to the growing security challenges in Manipur. The situation remains tense as authorities navigate the aftermath of the attack and work towards restoring peace in the region.
