In the midst of escalating tensions and protests in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, veteran Bollywood actor and BJP leader, Mithun Chakraborty, launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s recent remarks targeting the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The actor’s remarks came as a response to Banerjee’s allegations that Sandeshkhali had become an RSS stronghold, further implicating the organisation in orchestrating violence in the region.

Chakraborty vehemently opposed Banerjee’s assertions, stating, “Nothing can be more shameful than this. There is RSS all over India. This is not a negative force, RSS is a positive force.” He further emphasised the importance of acknowledging organisations that have made significant sacrifices for the country, challenging Banerjee to name any such entity.

The ongoing protests in Sandeshkhali have predominantly been led by women demanding justice and the arrest of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Shaikh and his supporters. Allegations against Shaikh and his associates include land grabbing and sexual assault, particularly targeting Hindu women. The fervent demands for justice underscore the deep-seated grievances within the community against the TMC leadership.

Addressing the situation, Chakraborty questioned the actions of the police in West Bengal, calling for accountability and transparency. He expressed concerns about potential biases and urged for impartiality in law enforcement, irrespective of political affiliations.

The backdrop of Mamata Banerjee’s statements in the Assembly, accusing the RSS of fomenting violence and instigating communal tensions, has further polarised the political landscape in West Bengal. Banerjee alleged that the BJP, with RSS backing, was deliberately stoking discord in sensitive areas like Sandeshkhali, exploiting tribal and minority divisions for political gains.

In response to Chakraborty’s remarks, BJP spokespersons have rallied behind the actor, echoing his sentiments and condemning Banerjee’s accusations against the RSS. The BJP has seized upon the opportunity to leverage the discontent and grievances expressed by the protesting women in Sandeshkhali, positioning itself as a champion for justice and accountability.

The situation in Sandeshkhali remains tense, with the demands for justice growing louder amidst allegations of political manipulation and violence. As the political rhetoric escalates, the plight of the protesting women and the broader issues of land rights and safety for marginalised communities continue to be at the forefront of public discourse.

In this charged atmosphere, the role of the police and law enforcement agencies is under increased scrutiny, with calls for impartiality and fairness in addressing the grievances of the people. The outcome of the protests in Sandeshkhali may well shape the political landscape of West Bengal in the days to come, as parties vie for public support and credibility in the run-up to elections.
