Sandeshkhali Protest 2024: Bengal BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar injured in scuffle with police, hospitalised

The President of the West Bengal branch of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Sukanta Majumdar was grievously injured after a heavy struggle took place between party workers and police at Taki, thirty-five kilometers away from Sandeshkhali where a large congregation of women marched to protest against TMC leader and goon Shajahan Sheikh who is accused for rape and land ration scams

West Bengal Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) president Sukanta Majumdar sustained injuries and was admitted to a hospital after falling from his car amid Sandeshkhali protests.

Majumdar lost balance and fell on the bonnet of a car in north Parganas district. He was later admitted to Basirhat Multi-facility hospital. The unrest stemmed from ongoing agitation by women in Sandeshkhali, who accused TMC leader Shajahan Shiekh and his associates of perpetrating atrocities against them.

Earlier, locals, particularly women marched through the various sections Sandeshkhali, carrying slippers in their hands demanding the arrest of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh in an alleged land ration scam and the alleged rape incidents.

The incident happened at the Taki on the banks of the river Ichamati River along the India-Bangladesh bodies. Sandeshkhali is around 35 km away from Taki. The car had a police sticker pasted on its windscreen, the official said.

Reacting to the news of injured Majumdar, BJP Spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla said “The TMC does not mean Trinamool Congress but Taliban Mansikta culture. On one hand West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee talks about Ma, Mati and Manush, on the other the state has become bandh, balatkari and bomb. Shahjahan Shiekh is roaming freely.

Meanwhile BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said that CM Mamta Banerjee is acting as a silent spectator. Addressing a press conference, Bhatia said “West Bengal is acting as a silent spectator. This is a matter of concern. Theis press conference highlights the lawlessness that prevails in West Bengal where it is clear to every citizen that rule of law does not prevail and exist, rather the law of anarchy ruler Mamta Banerjee prevails.”

“When the perpetrator of the crime happens to be TMC goon the Chief Minister of the state doesn’t even care even to uphold the dignity of the women of the state, especially Hindu women being targeted by the goons of Sheikh Shajahan, the absconder, he said.  Reacting to his statement, TMC listed a number of rape and criminal cases in the BJP run states and that jungle raj reflects in the states run buy double engine.

Tensions escalated when BJP activists led by Majumdar clashed with law enforcement on February 13, 2024 in Basirhat as their protests was thwarted. In a chaotic scene, the party members breached barricades and entered the village, prompting police to resort to force to disperse them. Following the altercation Majumdar and several other demonstrations were briefly detained before being released.

The West Bengal government have reimposed Section 144 of the code of Code of Criminal Procedures (CrPC) in and around 500 meters of the area in seven-gram panchayats including Sandeshkhali.
