Ghaziabad police apprehended Mohammad Wasim on January 2 for charges related to spreading hatred in society and issuing threats to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath. The arrest follows the viral circulation of a video in which Wasim can be seen using derogatory language and making threats against the state’s chief minister.

Wasim had been booked on December 23 by the Kotwali Masuri police station under the Ghaziabad police commissionerate (rural zone) under sections 153A and 295A of the Indian Penal Code. Since the booking, he had been evading arrest until the police successfully apprehended him on January 2.

In the video that went viral, Wasim engaged with a media person, stating, “We are Muslims. Will he (Yogi Adityanath) finish all the Muslims? His 90 generations cannot eliminate us. Has Yogi landed from the skies?”

When asked about Yogi Adityanath’s actions in curbing hooliganism in the state, Wasim alleged, “Yogi himself is a goon. Yes, I am saying this. Register a case against me. Yogi himself is a goon. See his history. See his records. See FIRs against him.”

Responding to a question about the upcoming 2024 general elections and public opinion, Wasim challenged the reporter, asking if they had the courage to question the Prime Minister. The accused also criticised Yogi Adityanath’s six years in power, alleging a focus on divisive issues between Hindu-Muslim communities.

Sub-inspector Rajiv Kumar of the Masuri police station took cognizance of the viral video and registered an FIR against Wasim. Following days of evading arrest, the police successfully apprehended him on January 2. Wasim now faces charges under sections 153A and 295A of the IPC. In a video released by the police, Wasim can be seen in custody.
