Guwahati: In a proactive crackdown on cow smuggling activities, Guwahati city police successfully foiled multiple attempts by smugglers to transport cattle to Meghalaya before the Christmas season. The vigilant efforts led to the rescue of 252 cows and the apprehension of 14 cow smugglers operating near the Assam-Meghalaya border.

On December 19, a dedicated team from Sonapur police station intercepted a Tata Ultra (AS01 QC 0994) near Digaru point, preventing the smuggling of 19 live cattle. The swift action resulted in the arrest of Md Iftikar Hussain (26) and Md Suruj Ali (50), both hailing from Morigaon district.

Another successful operation by the Guwahati city police, this time from Khetri police station, intercepted a truck (NL01 AD 1142) near Dimoria College, thwarting the smuggling of 28 live cattle. The apprehension of smugglers Ajgarh Ali (26) and Altap Ali (30) from Abhayapuri marked a significant step in curbing illegal activities.

On December 18th, a team from Sonapur police station intercepted a truck (AS26 C 8927) near Digaru, preventing the smuggling of 24 live cattle from Silapathar to Meghalaya. The arrests of Karim Ali (26) of Sonapur and Ikramul Ali (28) of Khetri showcased the city police’s commitment to taking legal action against those involved in the illicit trade.

A notable interception on December 17th, near Jorabat, saw a police team intercepting two trucks (AS01QC6486 & AS31 C 1082) attempting to smuggle 61 live cattle to Meghalaya. While the police have not disclosed the identities of the arrested smugglers, the move is part of a broader strategy to dismantle larger cow smuggling networks.

In the Kahikuchi area on the same day, a team from Khetri police station intercepted a truck (NL01 AC 2765) carrying 30 cattle destined for Meghalaya. The arrests of Abdul Karim (23) and Babu Hussain (20) demonstrated the city police’s unwavering dedication to curbing illegal activities.

Earlier on December 9th, the police intercepted a container truck (AS01 QC 6216) at Jorabat Link road, preventing the smuggling of 20 cattle to Meghalaya. Firoz Ahmed (19) of Jagiroad in Morigaon district was arrested in connection with the attempt.

On the same day, the police, in another operation at Jorabat crossing, intercepted two trucks (AS01FC4531 & NL01AB3849) attempting to smuggle 70 live cattle to Meghalaya. Although the smugglers managed to escape, the police remain committed to ongoing efforts to tackle such illicit activities.

The surge in cow smuggling attempts ahead of the Christmas season, driven by increased demand in Meghalaya, underscores the importance of the city police’s relentless efforts in maintaining law and order. The arrests and successful interceptions send a clear message that illegal activities will not be tolerated, especially during festive periods.
