In a distressing turn of events, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Ghaziabad police have initiated search operations in the Ganga canal near Muradnagar. The mission is to locate the body of an 18-year-old girl, Sheeba, allegedly murdered by her brothers due to her relationship with a Hindu boy.

Sheeba, a 18-year-old Muslim residing in Roorkee, Haridwar district, Uttarakhand, had been in a romantic relationship with a local Hindu boy, much to the disapproval of her brothers, 21-year-old Sufiyan and 24-year-old Mahtab.

To curtail her relationship, the family sent Sheeba to stay with her cousin in Delhi. However, even there, she maintained contact with her Hindu lover. Upon discovering this, Mahtab, her cousin, informed Sufiyan, leading to a sinister plot to murder Sheeba.

Under the guise of a leisurely trip, Mahtab and Sufiyan brought Sheeba to Muradnagar’s Ganganahar in Ghaziabad. It was here that they reportedly strangled her to death and disposed of her body in the Ganga canal.

DCP (Rural) Vivek Chandra Yadav revealed that the accused were intercepted by the Phantom team of police patrolling the area on their return from the crime scene. The brothers, Sufiyan and Mahtab, confessed to the murder during police interrogation.

During questioning, the accused disclosed that societal humiliation stemming from Sheeba’s love affair motivated them to commit the heinous act. DCP Yadav stated that the brothers traveled from Delhi to Muradnagar with Sheeba in an auto, covering a distance of about one and a half kilometers on foot along the Ganganahar canal track before carrying out the crime.

Both accused, Sufiyan, a laborer, and Mahtab, an auto driver in Delhi, have been arrested and charged with murder and other relevant sections. In their confession, they provided information leading to the recovery of the deceased’s belongings, including sandals, clothes, Aadhar card, and a towel.

Despite concerted efforts by the search teams, the strong water flow in Ganganahar has impeded the recovery of Sheeba’s body. The NDRF, SDRF, and police teams continue their efforts, with neighboring districts also notified of the ongoing search operation.
