JNU decides to patent logo and incorporate motto ‘Tamso ma Jyotirgamaya’

In a unanimous decision during a meeting of the Executive Council on November 24, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has chosen to modify its old and unregistered logo by adding the motto 'Tamso ma Jyotirgamaya.' The move aims to officially register both the existing logo and the newly approved motto.

Jawaharlal Nehru University’s  (JNU) Executive Council’s decision to modify its old and unregistered logo by incorporating the motto ‘Tamso ma Jyotirgamaya.’  is aimed at officially registering both the existing emblem and the newly approved motto. JNU’s Vice-Chancellor, Santishree Pandit, clarified that this adjustment does not denote a substantive change but rather serves as a procedural measure to safeguard and formalise the university’s iconic symbol.

Concurrently, the university administration has taken proactive measures to address infrastructure concerns, specifically targeting leakage issues in various hostels. Roof waterproofing initiatives have been initiated, and repair and renovation work is underway across multiple facilities to enhance the overall structural integrity of the campus.

Noteworthy is the financial backing from the University Grants Commission (UGC), which allocated Rs 28 crore in the previous year for an array of projects. These projects encompass structural repair and renovation activities within academic buildings, hostels, and staff quarters. The responsibility for executing these projects has been entrusted to the Central Public Works Department, ensuring a systematic approach to the enhancement of JNU’s infrastructure.

The decision to patent the logo and incorporate the new motto aligns with JNU’s commitment to preserving its visual identity and ethos. The university, known for its academic excellence and vibrant intellectual community, seeks to safeguard its emblematic representation by formalising the registration process.

As the administration addresses structural concerns through ongoing repair and renovation efforts, the move to patent the logo reflects a broader strategy to uphold the institution’s heritage and distinctiveness. With the backing of UGC funding, JNU continues to invest in its infrastructure, reinforcing its commitment to providing a conducive environment for academic pursuits.

The incorporation of the motto ‘Tamso ma Jyotirgamaya’ not only adds a symbolic layer to the university’s identity but also underscores a commitment to guiding individuals from darkness to light, aligning with the broader educational mission of enlightenment and knowledge dissemination.

JNU’s proactive approach to infrastructure maintenance and the formalisation of its visual identity through logo registration exemplify a commitment to excellence and a forward-looking vision for the institution.
