Tamil Nadu Police arrest social media influencers and critics of government and DMK Leaders

The Tamil Nadu police force has been actively pursuing the arrest of social media influencers and critics of the government, particularly the DMK party and its leaders. In the past 24 hours, two more individuals were taken into custody during a midnight operation, raising concerns about freedom of speech and expression in the state.

The Tamil Nadu police’s eagerness to stifle dissenting voices on social media and criticisms against the DMK party’s leaders has raised eyebrows. This follows a series of arrests in recent weeks, including that of N Muthuramalingam, the State Propaganda Secretary of South India Forward Bloc, for expressing his opinions on social media. Efforts are underway to secure his release on bail, highlighting the authorities’ relentless pursuit of individuals critical of the government.

In another incident, the state organising secretary of Hindu Munnani, V.S Sendhil Kumar, was arrested on charges of making defamatory comments against Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and MP A Raja. Kumar is alleged to have criticised the ministers during a Vinayagar Chathurthi celebration, particularly for their remarks. He has now been remanded to judicial custody, further fueling the controversy surrounding these arrests.

In a recent midnight operation, the Mathur police in Krishnagiri district arrested Tirupathi Kannan, a Hindu sympathiser based in Srivilliputhur, for his social media post. Kannan’s post narrated an incident at a biryani shop where a customer questioned the use of halal-certified meat. The owner’s response led to a protest by hundreds of Muslims outside the shop. Kannan made an awareness post regarding his decision to only buy meat that had undergone the Jhatka process, which is in line with Sikh and Hindu dietary preferences.

Adding to the controversy, a leader of Hindu Munnani in Tamil Nadu’s Arani was arrested following allegations of derogatory remarks against DMK Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. The arrest stemmed from a complaint lodged by DMK District Head AC Mani, who accused the Hindu Munnani leader, Mahesh, of making offensive statements during the Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations held on September 22.

These arrests have sparked a public outcry, with many questioning the necessity of such actions by the Tamil Nadu police. Critics argue that the cases could have been resolved through station bail and that the police’s partial attitude is highly condemnable. Some believe that the police force is working diligently to appease their political superiors.

As these arrests continue to attract attention and criticism, it remains uncertain how the situation will unfold. The actions of the Tamil Nadu police are under scrutiny, and it is unclear whether they will continue to pursue individuals expressing their opinions on social media with the same fervor in the future. The issue highlights the delicate balance between freedom of speech and maintaining law and order in a democratic society.

The recent series of arrests of social media influencers and critics of the government and DMK leaders in Tamil Nadu has raised concerns about freedom of expression in the state. The arrests, some of which were carried out during midnight operations, have sparked controversy and public outcry. The situation remains uncertain, and it is unclear whether the Tamil Nadu police will continue to pursue such cases with the same vigor in the future.
