Two accused nabbed by the police following an encounter in Uttar Pradesh (OpIndia)
On October 4, the Uttar Pradesh police apprehended four individuals involved in cattle smuggling following a brief confrontation in the Tanda and Swar areas of Rampur district. These suspects were taken into custody after being caught transporting a bull for illegal slaughter. All four of them sustained injuries during the encounter and were subsequently transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Additionally, two members of the police force were reported to have suffered injuries and are receiving treatment at a medical facility.
According to reports, police took action based on a tip-off about the presence of cow smugglers in the Swar region of the city. Upon arrival at the scene, the police observed the accused having tethered a bull and attempting to transport it unlawfully. Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects opened fire in their direction.
In response, the police returned fire, causing injuries to the suspects. One of the injured police officers, identified as Rakesh Kumar, was reportedly hurt during the confrontation. It has been confirmed that all the accused are residents of Rampur.
The accused individuals have been charged by the police under the appropriate sections of the law and are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
The police officially confirmed the situation, emphasizing that the accused individuals are involved in the illegal practice of cow smuggling. They have allegedly slaughtered and illicitly sold beef multiple times in the past. “It has come to our attention that just this past week, these individuals are believed to have slaughtered a bull,” stated the police.
Cattle hold immense importance as a source of livelihood for millions in rural India and are regarded with great affection as family members. Among these, cows are particularly revered as sacred by Hindus.
Cattle smuggling poses a serious criminal challenge, with smugglers often collaborating with butchers to steal cows, at times even taking in stray ones, for slaughter.
