Walls of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi have been defaced again with anti-Bharat, anti-Hindu and pro-separatist slogans on Sunday, October 1. According to the reports, walls of ‘School of Language Campus’ in JNU have been defaced with the slogans like “Saffron will burn” (Bhagwa Jalega), “Free Kashmir”, and “IOK” (Indian Occupied Kashmir).

The shocking development came to light on Sunday morning when a few pictures and videos of the defaced walls started doing rounds on social media. In the viral video, slogans against Prime Minister Modi were also seen. One of the slogans read ‘Jai Bhim’ and ‘Modi Teri kabra Khudegi’ (Modi, your grave will be dug), while a few controversial slogans written in blue on the floor could also be seen poured with red ink on it.

In addition, crossed out ‘CAA’ (Citizenship Amendments Act) and ‘NRC’ (National Register of Citizenship) were also defaced on the walls alongside a slogan pertaining to release of professor G.N Saibaba, a former Delhi university (DU) professor convicted for life imprisonment for having links with the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist).

It’s been reported that the defaced walls of the campus are being cleaned and an investigation into the matter has been initiated, however nothing has been made public about the perpetrators behind the anti-Bharat and anti-Hindu slogans.

Speaking with the media, Vikas Patel, secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad said that we have been informed about the defacing exercise on Saturday night. We have been demanding CCTV cameras be set up in the campus since long, however they are not being placed due to objections from a certain section. We will soon submit a memorandum to the administration on this.

Slogans on free Kashmir and release of GN Saibaba

It is to be noted that this is not the first time slogans and anti national activities pertaining to Kashmir have been reported from JNU and earlier similar anti-national slogans pertaining to alleged freedom of Kashmir had also been raised in the university campus.

In addition to pro-separatist slogans on Kashmir, slogans in favor of convicted professor G.N Saibaba is also raising eyebrows as the former DU professor has been convicted by a Gadchiroli sessions court for having links with the outlawed Maoist outfit in 2017. Saibaba, along with seven others were convicted by the court for their involvement with the Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF), an outfit believed to be an offshoot of the proscribed CPI (Maoist).

Notably, the court in its verdict had stated that Saibaba and the other accused were involved in instigating others to join the Maoist movement in Gadchiroli, a Maharashtra’s district affected by the Maoist insurgency for decades.

It is pertinent to mention here that in a similar development in December last year, slogans against Brahmins and Baniyas, a community that falls under the OBC category, were also found on the walls of JNU campus.

The slogans which were painted in red in the campus read ” Brahmins-Baniyas we are coming for you”, “We will avenge”, ” Go back to Sakha” and “There will be blood”.
