As many as half a dozen cadres associated with different frontal groups of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) have surrendered before the authorities in the insurgency-hit Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on September 18.

According to the information received, six cadres of the banned CPI Maoist, including a militia commander carrying a bounty of Rs one lakh surrendered before the officials of the district police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Revolutionary People’s Committee commander, Elmagunda, Sukka along with militia members Sanna, Lakhma and Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan members Nanda and Kosa turned themselves in front of the second command officer, 131 battalion CRPF, Mauli Mohan Kumar and Dy SP Uttam Pratap Singh and surrendered.

The surrender took place under the flagship Poona Narkom (a new dawn in Gondi dialect) campaign being run by the district police in Maoist affected Sukma district. Those who surrendered were involved in several Maoist related incidents under insurgency-hit Chintagufa police station limits of Sukma.

The development occurred a week after three hardcore cadres of the outlawed CPI Maoist including Kamla alias Kamli who was carrying a bounty of Rs 8 lakh surrendered before the police in Sukma. It was reported that those who surrendered before the authorities were involved in several incidents pertaining to violence in Sukma and adjoining Bijapur district.

Series of Surrenders by Maoists

It is to be noted that a number of ex cadres associated with the extremist outfit have surrendered before the police. They have decided to shun the path of violence under campaigns like Lone Varatu (an appeal to come back home) and Poona Narkom in recent months.

Earlier in a similar development a female Maoist cadre carrying a bounty of Rs 8 lakhs on her head had surrendered before the police on August 12. The surrendered Maoist cadre had been identified as Madavi Malle alias Gangi who was active in the banned outfit for 17 years.

Gangi’s surrender took place a day after as many as four ex cadres of the outlawed CPI Maoist had also surrendered before the authorities in neighboring Dantewada district on August 11.

In another development a Maoist couple, one of whom carrying a reward of Rs one lakh, had also surrendered before the police in Sukma on August 04. It was then reported that the couple was disgruntled with the extremist outfit and decided to part ways after being inspired by the surrender and rehabilitation scheme.

CPI Maoists Central Committee members held in Telangana

It is to be noted that in another significant development on the Maoist front, security forces in Telangana had also apprehended senior Maoist leader Sanjoy Deepak Roy on Friday, September 15.

According to the reports Sanjoy Deepak, a member of the all powerful Central Committee (CC) of the CPI Maoist was on his way to meet the general secretary of the outlawed outfit and other fellow members of the CC in Maad region of the Chhattisgarh when he was nabbed on specific Intel by the Cyberabad police.
