A shocking case has come to light, exposing the menace associated with an Islamic marriage. In this case, a pregnant woman has registered a complaint against her in-laws stating her father-in-law raped her and when she complained about this to her husband, he left her, saying, “Ab tum meri Maa ho” (Now you are my mother). Following the victim’s complaint, an FIR has been registered in this case.

On September 7, the victim, Arfa Begum (imaginary name), registered a complaint against her husband and father-in-law stating he has raped her and her husband has now started calling her his mother. Based on her complaint the police booked the accused under sections of rape.

The case pertains to the Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh and the case was registered in the Mirpur police station by the victim. As per her complaint, she was married to her husband on August 19, 2022. Since day one, her father-in-law had a bad eye on her.

On July 5, 2023, Arfa’s husband went to the doctor with his mother and then her father-in-law entered her room forcefully. He pushed her on the bed, tore her clothes and stuffed her mouth with clothes to rape her. After the rape her father-in-law also beat her up saying, if she would ever tell this to anyone he will get her killed.

When her husband returned home and she told him about this, he said, he cannot keep her as wife anymore. He justified his statement by referring to Shariat. He said, his wife had now become her mother.

He said, “According to Shariat, my father has had physical relations with you. I can’t keep you anymore. Now you are not my wife, but my mother.” Allegedly, after this, the husband beat the victim and drove her away from the house. In the complaint given to the police, the woman said that she could not lodge a complaint immediately after the incident due to fear of local trouble.

On the complaint of the victim, the police have taken action under sections 506, 376 and 323 of the IPC. Deputy SP of Jansath area while talking to the media informed about the ongoing investigation. He said that further action will be taken based on the evidence.

In 2005, a similar, Imrana case came into the limelight in the district. In that too, the woman had filed a case against her father-in-law alleging rape. When a fatwa was issued in the case, the husband refused to adopt the woman. Said that you are now my mother. There was a lot of ruckus when the victim showed a rebellious attitude against the rules of Shariat. This matter made headlines not only in the country but also in the media all over the world.
