On August 9, Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to the motion of no confidence and lashed out at the opposition in multiple notes. First, he called this motion politically motivated and delusional.

This article is a compilation of what the Home Minister said in the Lok Sabha, some quotes are kept as they are, while others are paraphrased.

No Confidence Motion is delusional

Shah began his speech by saying, in the past the motion of ‘No Confidence’ was brought to the table by parties when the ruling government had lost the majority in the house. The one brought to the table by the newly formed I.N.D.I.A. has no such ground and seems delusional.

“There is not a no-confidence in the PM and this government in the country…This no-confidence motion has been brought only to create a delusion. This no-confidence motion will show the real character of the Opposition in the country,” he said.

He brought to the attention of the house the famous corruption done under the UPA regime. He termed the present no-confidence motion as “politically motivated” and hence proceeded to furnish the performance and achievements of the government.

Modi: The most successful PM in India

The Home Minister called corruption, dynasties, and appeasement the three ills of Indian politics. The UPA’s character, he alleged, was to indulge in corruption to save their government.

“Now PM Modi practices the politics of performance. People have voted the Modi government to power twice. He is the most successful PM in India,” he said in the Lok Sabha.

He added, “After Independence, PM Modi’s govt is only there which won the trust of most of the people. PM Modi is the most popular leader among the public…PM Modi works tirelessly for the people of the country. He works continuously for 17 hours a day, without taking a single leave. People trust him”.

UPA won floor test with bribe

Shah compared the no-confidence motions brought against the NDA and UPA, alleging that Congress governments won the floor test by paying bribes.

“The government of Narasimha Rao won the no-confidence motion, but later, several members of that government were sentenced to jail because it was discovered that they had bribed leaders of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha to secure their votes in favour. Today both the Congress and JMM are sitting together,” he said.

He also added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi or former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee could have won no-confidence motions applying the same tactics. But they decided to stand by their principles.

‘Corruption quit India; appeasement quit India; dynasty quit India’
Shah opposed the motion of no confidence with a slogan from the Independence struggle. He said that Prime Minister Modi has currently adopted the slogans of ‘Corruption Quit India’, ‘Dynasty Quit India’, and ‘Appeasement Quit India’.

“As the nation breathes the air of Independence today, every 9th of August comes as a fragrant memory of the #QuitIndia Movement and the great souls who led it, filling our hearts with the resolute inspiration to echo in one voice: Corruption Quit India. Appeasement Quit India. Dynasty Quit India.”

“No-confidence motion brought to create confusion among people. The people and Parliament have full confidence in the Modi government,” Shah reiterated.

UPA protects power, NDA fights to protect principle

He mentioned how Congress used the slogan ‘Gareebi Hatao’ for their benefits, but it is the Modi government that provided them with cylinders, houses, toilets, lights, roads, and other basic amenities.

They (UPA) keep saying that they will waive off farmers’ loans. We don’t believe in just waving off loans but in making a system where one doesn’t have to take a loan. What we have given to farmers are not freebies, but we have made them self-sufficient,” Shah said.

“PM Modi’s government took some historic decisions and ended dynasties and graft. UPA’s character is to protect power, but NDA fights to protect principle,” he added.

A video of the same went viral on social media and was tweeted by the BJP’s official Twitter handle. The caption says, “Rahul Ji Kalawati to yaad hai na?”

‘UPA opposed Jan Dhan Yojna because..’

“It has to be understood why they (UPA) were opposing Jan Dhan Yojana. Former PM Rajiv Gandhi had said that when Re 1 is sent from the Centre to the poor, only 15 paise reaches the beneficiary. But today, the entire amount reaches the poor,” said Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Lok Sabha

Kisan Samman Nidhi, not ‘Revdi

The Home Minister told the house that our government is not just concerned with loan waivers but with empowering farmers that may not need to take loans anymore.

Shah also hit out at the opposition over freebies and called it ‘revadi’ culture. “They (UPA) keep saying that they will waive off farmers’ loans. We don’t believe in just waving off loans but in making a system where one doesn’t have to take a loan. What we have given to farmers are not freebies, but we have made them self-sufficient”, he said in Lok Sabha.

“It for the farmers of our country to decide – on one side there was UPA government which offered ‘lollypop’ of Rs 70,000 crore debt and on the other side there is a government that has transferred Rs 2 lakh 40 thousand crore directly to their accounts with dignity. I want to clarify that this is not revdi,” he added.

India dealt successfully with COVID

Shah highlighted how India has successfully tackled the COVID pandemic with the valuable cooperation of centre and state governments along with all the citizens of India.

“The opposition opposed India’s indigenous vaccine. I remember Rahul Ji and Akhilesh Ji campaigned against it naming it the Modi vaccine. They even opposed the lockdown. But the people of India trust Modi Ji even if the opposition does not and as a result 130 crore people took the vaccine and India became free from Covid” he said.

Appointment of CDS: A step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat

The Home Minister told the house about the numerous initiatives undertaken by the government in the defence sector including instituting the post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and making Indian Atma Nirbhar in the matter of production and procurement of defence equipment. He also mentioned the One Rank One Pension scheme.

Rahul Gandhi: A leader launched 13 times

During his speech, Shah took a veiled jibe at Rahul Gandhi, calling him a leader who had been launched 13 times but failed on all occasions. “ In this house, there is a leader who has been launched in politics 13 times till now, and he has failed all thirteen times. His launching was also done in this house”.

Abrogation of Article 370

Recalling the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Shah said the government will not hold discussions with Hurriyat or Jamaat, and neither with Pakistan. He said the government will only hold talks with the youth of Kashmir Valley. “After 33 years, cinemas have reopened in Kashmir. Night shows and the Shikara Festival have begun and 1.80 crore tourists flocked to the valley last year due to a series of reforms adopted by the Modi government promoting trade and tourism in the valley”.

He further told the house how the government has worked for the renovation of temples, the restoration of properties of Hindus, and how theatres and night shows have for the first time begun in Kashmir.

Drugs and internal security

Shah also spoke on the government’s crackdown on drug control and issues related to internal security. He recalled the expatriation of Sidhu Moose Wala murder accused Sachin Bishnoi who was brought back to India from Azerbaijan. He added that the attacks on India’s diplomatic missions in London, Ottawa, and San Francisco have been handed over to the NIA.

Take on Naxalism

The Union Minister for Home Affairs also detailed how various operations were undertaken to root out Maoist insurgency which was a major menace during UPA years and how the present government has been successful in tackling the left extremism.

He also highlighted that provisions of UAPA were strengthened to tackle this kind of terrorist activities.

Manipur Violence: ‘I was ready to speak on it..’

On the issue of Manipur, Shah said he is pained by the violence in the state which has left 152 dead since May 3. He, however, accused the opposition of politicising the situation. The minister condemned the viral video of the Manipuri women being paraded naked on May “This is a very unfortunate incident and it is a shame for society. But why did this video (Manipur viral video) come before the start of this Parliament session? If someone was having this video they should have given it to the DGP, and action would have been taken on that day itself (May 4)…We have identified all those nine people and arrested them”, he said.

“The Prime Minister of the country called me at 4 AM and 6 AM for three days straight. He was very concerned. We conducted 16 video conferences, sent the Security Advisor, deployed 36,000 security personnel, changed the Chief Secretary, and changed the DGP (Director General of Police)”, he added.

“I agree that there have been incidents of violence in Manipur. No one can support such incidents. Doing politics on these incidents is shameful. From day one I was ready for the discussion on the Manipur issue but Opposition never wanted to do a discussion. The opposition doesn’t want me to speak but they can’t silence me. 130 cr people have selected us so they have to listen to us…During the past six years of our government, the need for curfew never rose,” said Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Lok Sabha.

Shah stated that “In 1993, Naga-Kuki clashes were occurring in which 700 were killed, 200 injured and 45,000 became refugees. The clashes happened for one year. Who answered in the Lok Sabha? MoS Rajesh Pilot and they do not allow me to speak. The Home Minister did not visit the place and they are disrupting the House asking Prime Minister to speak,”

He further added, “In 2004, 1,700 people were encountered when Prime Minister was Manmohan Singh and P Chidambaram Home Minister. There was no debate in the Parliament on this issue. Do not politicise this issue which is a matter of ethnic violence”.

International stature

Amit Shah stated, “PM Modi is the one leader who has made India proud globally be it on climate change, Green Hydrogen. While hosting the G20 presidency, the summits were held in 25 cities to display India’s culture. PM Modi has also been awarded the highest civilian award from 14 countries.”

He further dedicated the highest civilian awards bestowed upon the Prime Minister to the people of India.

No talks with Hurriyat, Jamiat, Pakistan: Amit Shah

“We will not speak to Hurriyat nor Jamiat, we will speak to the youth of the Kashmir Valley. There are no funeral processions of terrorists now because they are buried right where they are being killed. The trend of stone pelting in Jammu and Kashmir has completely ended now,” Amit Shah said in Lok Sabha.

Ban on PFI

The Home Minister said, “We banned PFI in the country and conducted raids at over 90 locations in the country. Cases regarding attacks on our missions in London, Ottawa and San Francisco were handed over to NIA. 26/11 Tahawwur Hussain Rana will also soon face the judiciary in India.”

Why UPA became INDIA?

He said, “UPA was a good name; why did they change it? It is so because the previous name was burdened with scams and I.N.D.I.A is an attempt to wash all sins”

Shah stated that “Highest number of violent ethnic incidents happened during the rule of Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi. We have always urged for peace even when we were in Opposition”.

He highlighted how the damage was done to institutions under the Indira Gandhi regime. He mentioned how senior judges were bypassed, JNU was clamped down and the powers of autonomous institutions such as UPSC were curtailed.

Opposition wants Ruckus not discussion

“A false perception was propagated that the government was avoiding a discussion of the Manipur issue. Right from the beginning, we were prepared for a discussion, but the opposition sought ruckus rather than a productive discussion,” Amit Shah said.

Also, Shah attributed the tensions in the Northeastern state to the Manipur High Court’s ruling. He stated, “The High Court’s order in April only aggravated the situation.” This order directed the state government to contemplate adding the Meitei community to the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list.

Cross border terrorism

“Earlier, terrorists used to infiltrate Kashmir from across the border and decapitate soldiers, without any response. Pakistan was stunned twice, once with a surgical strike and the second time with an air strike, as the Narendra Modi government carried out the task of eliminating terrorists by entering their homes within Pakistan,” Amit Shah said in Lok Sabha.

India became world’s third-largest economy

“Our government has worked to elevate the country’s economy from the 11th rank to the 5th rank in the past 9 years. I have full confidence that Narendra Modi will become the Prime Minister of the country again, and by 2027, we will witness India becoming the world’s third-largest economy,” Amit Shah said in Lok Sabha.
