In Uttar Pradesh’s Ameti district, a shocking case of Islamic fanaticism has come to light. Here, a father killed his own daughter over her alleged relationship with a Hindu man. The family, on the other hand, claimed that their daughter died of illness. The police had to dig out the corpse and send for a post-mortem. As of now, the deceased father and brother have been booked on charges of culpable homicide.

What says the FIR?

A First Information Report (number–109/2023) was registered at the Piparpur police station of Ameti district on August 6 by Chowkidar Ram Sukh stationed at Tikawar village.

In his statement to the police, the chowkidar stated that Niyamat Ullah and his son Haider Ali beat their daughter Afreen Bano near Hanumat Inter College Dhammor. They were thrashing her over her alleged relationship with a Hindu boy.

Later, they took her to the house, where they again beat her up. Later, her condition deteriorated, and they had to take her to the hospital. In the meantime, Afreen died. All of this happened between August 4 and August 5.

As per the FIR, the accused, Niyamat Ullah and Haider Ali have been booked under IPC Section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder).

Organiser tried calling the Piparpur police station on August 8 but the calls went unanswered.

A video of the attack went viral on social media. In the said video, the accused Haider and Niyamat Ullah were seen thrashing Afreen, who was wearing a white dress.

Later, the duo tried taking her home, but she was not ready to go with them. It was only after the police’s intervention that the woman went home. On the same night, Afreen was found dead in the house under suspicious circumstances. The family alleged that she died of illness and buried her in a rush.

Later, the chowkidar informed the police, after which a case was registered. After the case was registered, the police booked Niayamat and Haider. However, no arrests have been made in this case till now. Later, on the orders of the magistrate, the police dug the grave and took out the victim’s body for postmortem.

A postmortem report will make things clear in this case.

Similar cases from past

In 2020, a case was reported from Karnataka where a Muslim family killed their own daughter for having an affair with a Hindu man. They also killed the boy who was a Dalit.

According to the reports, the 19-year-old Basavaraj Madivalapaa Badiger, an autorickshaw driver at Saladahalli village, and his 18-year-old lover Davalbi Bandagisab Tambad, a resident of the neighbouring Khanapur, were allegedly murdered by the father and other family members of the girl.

As per the villagers, the boy and girl were in a relationship for the past six months. The girl’s family members had warned Badiger to stay away from her. But they continued to meet, which had irked the girl’s family.

The father of the girl and other family members rushed to the field and stabbed them after tying them with a rope, the police said.

Cases exposing hidden caste bias among Muslims

In July 2023, visuals of the brutal murder where a brother beheaded his own sister and carried her head on the streets sent shock waves throughout the country. The incident was reported in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district on July 21. The accused identified as Mohammad Riyaz was arrested by the police.

As per the details, the accused Riyaz (24) had a dispute with his sister Ashifa Bano, who had a love affair with a man from her own community and caste, Mohammad Chand Babu. Riyaz was totally against the alliance, and hence he chopped her head with a sharp weapon following a heated argument.

Riyaz did not stop here, as videos of him walking on streets carrying the chopped head of his sister went viral. The heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Mithwara village, under the jurisdiction of Fatehpur police station. As per the villagers, Riyaz was walking towards the Fatehpur police station. As soon as the police received the information, they arrested the accused.

Qureshi and Saifi caste

In August 2022, a shocking case from Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut exposed the hidden caste system and web of honour killings among Muslims. As per the reports, a father from the Qureshi caste beheaded her own daughter for having an affair with a man from the Saifi (lower) caste.

As per reports, the woman’s parents, who belong to the Qureshi caste of Muslims, were unhappy that the man she was in a relationship with, belonged to the Saifi caste.

A report published today by Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar said that key accused Shahid told the police that his daughter, Sania, was in a love affair with one Waseem Saifi against his consent.

The same day, the Lisari police filed a first information report (FIR) in the case (number 470/22) under IPC sections 302 and 201. The FIR was filed on the statement of a woman named Bushra, who lives near the spot where the body was found.

On 18 August, police released a press note saying they had arrested the woman’s parents, Mohammed Shahid Qureshi, 38, and his wife Shehnaz, 36, both residents of Lisari Gate, for the murder a day earlier. The parents were unhappy with their daughter’s boyfriend, the note says. IPC 120B was added to the case after their arrest.

Syeds and Faqirs

In November 2022, a similar case was reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district. In this case, a Muslim family killed their daughter saying “How can we Syeds give our daughter to a Faqir?”.

Mehezabin was married and mother of three children. On 20 October, she eloped with Arif, who was also married. Mursaleen, along with his brothers and cousins named Mozzamil, Armaan, Muntazir and Shahnawaz killed Arif and hid the body in the forest. Then they brought Mehezabin to Asara village and killed her too.

Following the case, Ramala Police booked the five suspects under IPC sections 302, 36, 506, 201, 120B and 34 (FIR number 309/2022). A police case was also registered in Meerut’s Chaprauli Police Station where Arif was allegedly killed, under IPC sections 302, 201 and 147 (FIR number 328/2022).
