A Maoist couple, one of whom was carrying a reward, surrendered before the security forces in the insurgency-hit Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, said police on August 4. The couple, identified as Muchaki Galle and Muchaki Bheema, turned themselves before the authorities citing discrimination within the rank and file of the proscribed Communist Party of India (Maoist).
The surrender took place as part of the ongoing Poona Narkom ( meaning new dawn in Gondi dialect) campaign being run by the police in the Maoist-affected district of Sukma. “The couple was impressed with the surrender and rehabilitation scheme of the Government and disgruntled with the banned outfit. The female cadre among them was carrying a reward of Rs one lakh”, informed Sub – Divisional Police Officer (SDOP) Tongpal Tomesh Verma.
The surrender took place days after the Maoist celebrated their annual Martyr Week between July 28 to August 3, which ended with no significant attack carried out by the outlawed outfit for two consecutive years.
Let us tell you that the security forces have been continuously running counter-insurgency operations in the Maoist core belt of Bastar lately, which has ultimately led to the surrender of many Maoist cadres.
Earlier in a similar development, as many as four cadres of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) carrying a collective bounty of Rs 20 lakhs had also surrendered before the security forces in Dantewada district on July 17.
Those who had surrendered included Chotu Mandavi, his wife Lakhme Mandavi, Masa Mandavi and his wife Ayate Mandavi.
Those who surrendered informed that the growing presence of security forces and opening of new security pickets in the dense unfamiliar terrain had done immense damage to the proscribed CPI Maoist, whose cadres are in a hurry to defect.
It was reported that the surrendered cadres were inspired by the Lone Varatu (an appeal in Gondi dialect to come back) campaign being run by the Dantewada police in which more than 600 ex-Maoist cadres including around 157 with a reward, have so far surrendered before the authorities.
In another incident, a Chetna Natya Mandali (an offshoot of the outlawed CPI Maoist) Commander had also turned up before the police and surrendered in Sukma on July 15. The surrendered cadre was identified as Muchaki Kosa, who was carrying a bounty of Rs one lakh for his alleged involvement in several Maoist-related incidents.

It was then reported that Muchaki Kosa was working with the Chetna Natya Mandali, a cultural wing of the banned Maoist outfit and was disappointed with the hollow ideology of the extremist organisation. The surrender took place in the presence of the CRPF and police officials.
Earlier, another senior Maoist cadre from the district had surrendered before the Alluri Sitaram Raju police in Andhra Pradesh on July 13. The surrender cadre was identified as Deva alias Bhagat, a resident of Dabbakunta village under Chintagufa police station limits of Sukma. Deva was carrying a bounty of Rs five lakhs and was associated with the Maoist outfit for over a decade.
A week before the surrender of Deva, a female cadre of the CPI Maoist had also surrendered before the security forces on July 6. The surrendered cadre was identified as Kawasi Bheeme, an active member of the Dakshin Bastar battalion no 01 of the PLGA. She was carrying a bounty of Rs 8 lakh on her head.
