At least 15 people died and several were injured after a transformer exploded on the banks of the Alaknanda River in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, officials said on July 19.

Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Kumar told the media that an outpost in charge of Pipalkoti was among the persons killed. Chamoli Superintendent of Police (SP) Parmendra Doval said, “10 people died and several were injured after a transformer exploded on the banks of the Alaknanda River in the Chamoli district.”

The police officer said that the injured persons have been admitted to the district hospital.
Speaking about the incident, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami told the media, that “A magisterial investigation has been ordered. Helicopters are also being used to shift those injured to different medical centres for treatment”

As per the reports, the people are also injured due to electrocution at the under-construction Namami Gange project on the banks of the Alaknanda River and they are being air lifted to AIIMS Rishikesh by helicopter for treatment. So far 15 people have died in this incident.

Further, Uttarakhand ADG (Law and Order) V Murugesan speaking about the current situation after the incident too place, said that, “the incident took place at Namami Gange project in Pipalkoti, Chamoli. 15 people, including a sub-inspector and three homeguards, were electrocuted”.
