Assam police arrested members of a newly formed terrorist outfit at Tamulpur in the Bodoland Territorial Region’s (BTR) Baksa district. This terrorist group had been engaging in extortion activities targeting business people and government officials.
The arrest of seven people from various places in Assam, Nagaland, and West Bengal in connection with the case was announced by the Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh, on June 2.
In a Twitter post, DGP Singh stated that Assam Police had dismantled the entire network of the newly formed terrorist group that had planned to begin extortion in the BTR region of Assam under the guise of the of Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) and Boro Liberation Army (BLA). He tweeted, “Total seven persons have been arrested from different parts of Assam, Nagaland and West Bengal”.

Recently under the guise of the militant organisation KLO, the gang demanded Rs 5 lakh from a businessman in Tamulpur district, according to DGP Singh. After that, police filed a criminal case on June 26 under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 384 (extortion), 506 (criminal intimidation), 386 and 387(extortion by putting any person in fear of death or of grievous hurt).
DGP Singh stated, “During investigation, we found that this is a group of many like minded persons who were making extortion demands to many government officials and businessmen of various districts in the name of KLO and BLA (Boro liberation army). And had already taken money from many of them”.
Notably, this terror group shared information about their outfit with the media last month. Tamulpur Superintendent of Police Pankaj Yadav added, “The outfit had planned the official announcement of launching BLA by releasing a terror video. They also had plans of subsequent training and indulging in other terror activities. However, before they could materialise their plans, Assam Police busted the terror group and arrested all the members of BLA from different locations of Assam, Nagaland and West Bengal”.
Police have identified the arrested individuals as Dauharu Bodo (43) alias Dadhiram (Money Collector) from Tangla, Udalguri district; Amit Boro (39) from Rawta, Udalguri district; Buddhiman Debbarma alias Tripuri (45) and Bijay Teron (23) from Barpathar, Karbi Anglong district; Rengwna Brahma, also known as B Rwngwra (34) from Udalguri district; Bhumsa Chandra Boro alias B Bwkhangsa or Bhupen (23), from Dhula, Darrang district; and Kajal Ray (42) from Tamulpur.
The Assam Police presented about 20 police officers with the DGP’s Commendation Certificate for their successful operation in dismantling the entire network of the newly formed terrorist group.
The DGP commendations were received by two Additional Superintendents of Police, three Inspectors, four Sub-inspectors, two Havildars, two Unarmed Branch Constables, six Armed Branch Constables, and one Assam Home Guard (AHG).
These officers were recognised for their contributions to the arrest of KLO and BLA cadres, the destruction of training camps, and the recovery of weapons.
Assam police have been tightening their grip over terror activities in the state. Recently on April 24, Assam police arrested three Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) terrorists from the Dhubri district. The arrested terrorists were identified as Md. Safiqul Islam, Md.Mojahidul Mandol and Md. Badshah Seikh. They are part of an Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) module active in the Dhubri district.
The ABT is linked to Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). On a specific intel, the Dhubri district police conducted a raid in the Bagulamari and Sastarmari areas of the district on April 24 early morning.
The police have received several objectionable documents from the arrested individuals. The police seized one laptop, three mobile handsets, and several SIM cards.
DGP Singh informed about the arrests and said, “All manifestations of ABT and AQIS are designated as Terrorist Organisations as per the First Schedule of UAPA 1967”.
