The much-awaited magnum opus Adipurush was released in theaters and contrary to the hype created around the film, it is facing backlash on social media platforms. Since the first teaser of the film was dropped in October 2022, the film is facing criticism.
From Ravan having a long beard and his eyes filled with kajal to Hanuman Ji without moustaches, Meghnath with tattoos, Hanumanji greeting mata Sita in American style and Bhagwan Ram in white attire, the film is facing massive backlash for not meeting the audience’s demands.
The audience is angry at the fact that the makers even after claiming the film to be based on the epic Ramayan have done blunders with the story. The looks of Ravan were called out in the first teaser itself, the people called out the colour of the clothes for Bhagwan Ram and mata Sita, and then people called out the missing moustache of Hanuman Ji.
Even after revising the teaser and poster of the film multiple times, the director, Om Raut has done a lot of blunders.
Notably, the Valmiki Ramayan has depicted the epic in detail, including the attire and looks. Every creation around the epic Ramayana is based on or is inspired by this Ramayan only.
Today we will take you through some of the shlokas and khands of this epic to decipher the looks and attires as described in the epic with the looks in film ‘Adipurush’.
Bhagwan Ram in Valmiki Ramayan: In sarg 35 of Sundarkandh, the saint has described the looks and attire of Bhagwan Ram from Shlok 6 to 23. It is when Mata Sita asked Hanuman Ji to tell about Bhagwan Ram’s looks and appearances in Ashok Vaitika to confirm Raghav sent Hanuman to Lanka.
Hanuman Ji says, “Ram Ji has big shoulders and his eyes are slightly reddish while his skin is dusky. Three lines pass by his forehead and stomach. If one measures his height with 24 finger steps, his height is four hands long. His fingertips, eyebrows, hairs and body hair are soft. All of his teeth are aligned. His brother Lakshmana also looks similar just his complexion is fair”.
Ravan as described in Valmiki Ramayan: In Sundarkahand sarg 10, from Shloka 6 to 30 there is a detailed description of Ravan’s looks and attire. While looking for Mata Sita in Lanka, Hanuman Ji found a palace where Ravan is sleeping. Describing his looks, the epic says, “Like a black cloud, Ravan who is dusky in complexion, almost black is sleeping in his bed wearing Kundal in his ears. He has applied red chandan on his whole body and is adorned with jewels, looks like he is sleeping on some hilltop. Both his forearms had marks of elephant teeth and sudarshan chakra, which he received while fighting with Airawat elephant. He was wearing white dhoti with yellow dupatta. His face is shining”.
In another context Hanumanji said in Ramayan that, Ravan has everything from looks to skills and mind, if he was not on the path of injustice he would have become the kind of heaven.
Mata Sita and other characters: As per sarg 18, shloka 32 of Sundarkandh, mata Sita has long black hairs, beautiful eyes, and other beautiful features which no other women had at that time.
Hanuman Ji, as per sarg 32, shloka 1-2 of the Sundarkandh is brown in colour, wearing white dress when Mata Sita first saw him, his eyes are glittering as if they were made of gold.
As per the sculptures of ancient times Bhagwan Ram have been described as follows:
During the fifth century his statue was built out of terracotta, no moustache is available in the statue. In 17th-century paintings, the skin colour of Bhagwan Ram is blue and that of Lakshman in white, they are wearing pearl ornaments. In 18th century portrait, Bhagwan Ram can be seen carrying bow and wearing a crown, some ornaments but no slippers.
In paintings from 1816, did around Tiruchirapalli and Tanjvour, Bhagwan Ram can be seen wearing pearl ornaments, yellow Dhoti and a mukut. In this picture he can be seen having a moustache.
As per the ancient pictures and statues, Ravan can be seen having ten heads located at pattadkal’s virupaksh temple. In statues from 18th century he can be seen wearing a mukut and having ten heads, the beards are missing in all these pictures and statues.
However, in 19th and 20th century paintings, Ravan can be seen having beards and moustache, having ten heads and twenty arms.
Following the pic a number of films and series have been made in the past, the first being Ramayan TV serial made in 1986 by Ramanand Sagar. Then the series ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ in 1988 by Shyam Benegal. Then Yugo Sako, a director from Japan made ‘Ramayan: The Legend of Prince Ram’ in 1993. And now in 2022, the makers have picked but India’s biggest epic to make the film ‘Adipurush’.
