Guwahati: Muslim mob attacked Doboka police station in Hojai district on June 13, injuring two police personnel, including two lady constables. As per the report, one woman mysteriously committed suicide in the Jugijan area under the Doboka police station on June 13. Her family accused that her husband and family’s torture forced the woman to commit suicide.

Doboka police arrested Abdul Malik, the accused husband of the lady who committed suicide. But on the evening of June 13, several dozens of people from the Jugijan area came in mini trucks assembled near the Doboka police station. Police repeatedly asked the mob to leave the place, but the mob was demanding to bring the accused, Abdul Malik, out of the police station. After some time, the mob entered Doboka Police Station and attacked the husband of the deceased woman inside the police station. When the police tried to push back the mob, they attacked the police personnel.

The mob even brought the dead body of the deceased woman to the police station and demanded that the accused husband should be handed over to the mob. The mob armed with bamboo sticks and rods attacked the police station and injured two police personnel, including two women constables. The injured police personnel have been identified as Jintu Baishya and Dipika Bora, a female constable.

As per the report, family members and relatives of the deceased woman entered the police station shortly after the accused, Abdul Malik, was brought to the police station. The mob beat the accused person inside the police station, and the police personnel who tried to stop them from beating the accused were also attacked by the mob.

The station in charge of Doboka police station informed the headquarter for additional deployment of forces, and jawans of SSB arrived immediately at the spot. SSB jawans acting swiftly apprehended four people who attacked the police station and police personnel. The mob fled after the arrival of additional forces. A case was registered against attacking a police station and attacking security personnel on duty.

Hojai police have arrested ten people so far in connection with the attack. The arrested persons have been identified as Asad Ali, Nasima Begum, Mahmuda Begum, Simran Begum, Phul Banu, Abdul Sukur, Faizul Haque, Javed Ali, and Ilias Ali and Abdul Sukur. Doboka police station sources said that the additional forces reached the spot promptly; otherwise, it could have been a disaster.

The mob was so violent that they tried to lynch the accused inside the police station lockup. The mob even broke the police lockup to take the accused out of the station. It should be mentioned that on May 21 2022, a Muslim mob of several hundred people attacked the Batadrava police station and attacked police personnel on duty. They vandalised the station before setting it on fire. Around three policemen were injured in the attack. One person reportedly died in hospital on May 20 after he was admitted by Batadrava police after falling sick in police custody. The mob accused that the man was beaten brutally in police custody. The mob assembled in front of the Batadrava police station and attacked it, and vandalised the police station before setting it on fire.

Thirty-four people were identified for their involvement in the arson of the Batadrava police station based on the video clips, which include more than seven women. A group of Muslim women was seen setting motorcycles and vehicles of the police station on fire. The mastermind behind inciting the mob to burn down the Batadrava police station, Ashiqul Islam, died in a road ‘accident’ early on May 29 2021. Police later said the accident took place in the Raidingiya area around 2.30 am, when Ashiqul Islam jumped out of the police vehicle he was in and was hit by another police vehicle.
