As per the order issued on May 18 by Haryana’s home and health minister, Anil Vij ordered overweight and pot-bellied police officers to be transferred to police lines until they get in shape again and become fit. The overweight police officers and staff can resume their duties once they become physically healthy through exercise.

As per the official statement by the Home Department, “keeping in view the fitness of the officers and personnel of Haryana Police, Home Minister Anil Vij has today issued written directions to the Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department that many of the police personnel in the police department have become overweight and by the time, their weight is being increased more, should be transferred to the police line”.

Keeping in mind the fitness of police officers and staff, the state’s health minister sent formal directions in this respect to the additional chief secretary of the home department. The statement added, “In this regard, the Home Minister Anil Vij has today issued a written direction to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department so that the police personnel whose weight has increased and continues to increase with time, can be fit through exercise. Only after that, they should be deputed on duty”.

The Home Minister noticed that many police personnel in the police department have become “overweight and by time, their weight is being increased more”. He wrote, “I would like that all the police officers/ personnel, who have become overweight be transferred to police line and make them do exercise unless they get fit for duty”.

Even in Assam, a similar kind of dictum was ordered for the police personnel. In line with directions of the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma, the State police headquarter decided to go in for the professional recording of the Body Mass Index (BMI) of all Assam Police personnel, including IPS/APS officers and all battalions and organisations, Assam police Director General G P Singh announced this on May 15.

The DGP said, “We plan to give three months’ time to all Assam Police personnel including Indian Police Service (IPS) and Assam Police Service (APS) officers till August 15 and then start BMI assessment in the next fifteen days. All those who are in obese (BMI 30+) category would be offered another three months’ time to reduce weight (till November End) and after that VRS option except those who have genuine medical reasons like thyroidism etc.”

It has been learnt from the top officials of Assam police the police force must remain fit, keeping in mind the current scenario and law and order situation arising across the globe.

So the home department, headed by the Chief Minister, decided to conduct a fitness survey of all State police personnel who are ‘unfit’ regarding their Body Mass Index (BMI).
