The Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, has constituted a panel to discuss students’ engagement in various university activities to promote their overall development rather than just focusing on academic growth. According to the BHU spokesperson, the Dean of Students will chair the panel.

The panel will study the most promising practices on student engagement, especially those practised in other educational institutions. The panel will identify opportunities and activities where students may be effectively and proactively engaged.

This panel aims to enhance the university’s ecosystem in curricular and co-curricular activities. It will suggest ways to help students adapt to the university’s environment and determine means to execute reform measures to help students.

Furthermore, the panel will make recommendations for other pertinent factors that will improve the quality of student life at the university. The committee has been tasked with reviewing the report on the “mechanism for rehabilitating errant students.”

The panel members include:
1)S Shrikrishna, BHU Controller of Examinations.
2)Ankur Singh, Department of Biochemistry.
3)Rajneesh K Singh, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Sir Sunderlal Hospital.
4)Vaishali Raghuvanshi, Member, Legal Cell, Mahila Mahavidyalaya.
5)Trayambak Tiwari, Department of Psychology.
6)Sayantan Sanyal, Advisor (Students Affairs), the committee’s member secretary.

National Education Policy 2020
On July 29, 2020, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 was set forth by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now renamed Ministry of Education). This policy has been put forward to reconstruct the Indian Education System.
The last educational policy on education was formed in 1986. The main focus of NEP 2020 is to make education more inclusive, especially in a diverse country like India.

It focuses on students’ general development apart from their academic and educational growth. The policy demands that students’ physical, psychological, and emotional well-being be ensured by providing support facilities and career counsellors to all students.

The NEP also focuses on inclusivity by promoting education in our country’s local languages. To make it possible, on April 19, UGC sent a letter to the Vice-Chancellors and Principals of universities and colleges requesting to allow students to write exams in their local language even if the programme is offered in English medium. The UGC also urged universities to promote the translation of original writing into local languages and use local languages in the teaching-learning process.

The NEP 2020 emphasises the importance of maximising communication in all Indian languages for improved cognitive development and the learner’s overall personality growth.
