Assam: Cow meat thrown in a Maa Kali temple before Ram Navami procession in Hailakandi

Hailakandi: While the whole nation was busy celebrating the holy Ram Navami, miscreants threw beef packets in a Kali temple in Hailakandi town in Southern Assam. On March 30, the Hindu devotees of Hailakandi district were preparing for the annual Ram Navami rally.

The Ram Navami rally was organised by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). While the city was preparing for the mega rally, miscreants put packets of beef in a Kali temple in the 10th ward of the city. When Pujari entered the mandir premises for the morning ‘aarti’, he found a bad smell coming from the main mandir.

The Pujari searched the mandir and found some packets put by the miscreants. He immediately called the temple management committee members and informed the police. Hailakandi Superintendent of police (SP) Nabaneel Mahanta rushed to the mandir. The police team found beef inside the packets. Hundreds of people immediately gathered on the mandir premises. President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha Hailakandi Milan Das alleged that the incident was preplanned. The city was busy during the Ram Navami rally, and the miscreants wanted to destroy the harmony and disturb the rally. This is an attempt to make the holy place of the Sanatani people unholy.

The police assured the people that the culprits would be arrested soon. VHP demanded immediate action by police and asked the security agency to nab the miscreants within 24 hours. Hailakandi police started an investigation of the unwanted incident in the Muslim-majority district, but no one has been arrested. Southern Range DIG Konkon Jyoti Saikia also visited the temple and assured that police would take adequate action to nab the culprit. Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in Hailakandi city. No unwanted incidents have been reported from any part of the district.

SP Nabaneel Mahanta said that the incident was an attempt to disturb the harmony of the district by the miscreants. Police will maintain strict vigil to resist such anti-social elements, SP Mahanta said. Meanwhile, the incident shocked the Hindu population of the district. The administration appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony.
