Dibrugarh: Amid the massive crackdown against the Khalistani sympathisers in Punjab, 4 arrested close aides of radical preacher Amritpal Singh’s outfit were brought to Assam from Punjab March 19. The arrested Khalistani radical sympathisers were put into the Dibrugarh central jail in upper Assam. Security has been tightened in Dibrugarh central jail after shifting the four Khalistani sympathisers.
Police sources said the Khalistanis brought to Dibrugarh were Daljit Singh Kalsi, Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Pradhanmantri Bajeka.
They were among the 78 people arrested in the Punjab Government’s major crackdown against ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD), headed by Khalistani sympathiser Amritpal Singh, who is wanted in several criminal cases.
Four people who were arrested in Punjab have been brought here. They are being kept at the Dibrugarh Central Jail,” Dibrugarh SP Shwetank Mishra informed the media.
A 27-member team of Punjab police headed by an inspector general-rank officer accompanied the four accused to Dibrugarh. The arrested Khalistani sympathisers were brought to Jorhat on a special flight. Later they were brought to Dibrugarh central jail amid heavy security by road.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was in New Delhi on March 19, told reporters that Assam police would provide security to the accused in the jail.
“Sometimes, such persons arrested in one state are sent to another state’s jail. Once Assam also sent arrested prisoners to Bhagalpur jail in Bihar. As per my information, four people have been sent by Punjab Police. We will provide them all security in the jail,” Chief Minister Dr Sarma said.
It should be mentioned that Dubai-returned Amritpal Singh, the head of the pro-Khalistani organisation’ Waris Punjab De’ (WPD), is being accused of spreading pro-Khalistani and anti-national activities in the state of Punjab. In February, thousands of supporters of the outfit attacked Ajnala Police Station in Punjab with firearms to release one of its arrested members.
WPD members are involved in many criminal cases relating to spreading disharmony among classes, attempting to murder, attacking police personnel, and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duties of public servants, according to the Punjab Police.
