Iqbal Singh Lalpura, the chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), said on March 5 that the NCM had rescued Indians stuck in Libya with the cooperation of the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Tunisia.

Iqbal Singh Lalpura announced the evacuation at a news conference on March 5. He said that the NMC works tirelessly to protect minorities from becoming victim of crimes. He continued by saying that the National Minority Commission and Foreign Affairs Minister were constantly communicating so that minorities outside India will not encounter any issues.

At the press conference, he disclosed that the incident—in which a few persons were illegally transported from India to Dubai and then to Libya—came to light in February.
As soon as the NMC learned about the situation, they spoke to the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar since India doesn’t have an embassy in Libya.

He informed that the stranded Indians were wounded and faced food or water scarcity.
Firstly, four people were rescued, and they reached their homes on February 13.

While eight people remained lost and had no supplies or money. The remaining eight persons returned to India on March 2, according to information provided to the media by Iqbal Singh Lalpura, chairman of the National Council for Minorities (NCM).

He thanked the EAM and told the Indians abroad that the MEA was there to help them if they faced any difficulty.

He also asked the Government of Punjab to take legal action against those who have put them in this situation.

Libya has suffered violence and unrest since the fall of the late leader United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) regime in 2011.

As the dictatorship of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi collapsed in 2011, the nation has been experiencing increasing bloodshed and turmoil.

Now, the nation is split between a government that the House of Representatives chose in March and the Government of National Unity, located in Tripoli and won’t cede power to anybody other than an elected administration.
