GUWAHATI : NIA Special Court, Guwahati, convicted terrorists Mohd Shahnowaj Alom alias Shahnawaj Alam and Mohd Omar Faruque alias Omar Faruk, both hailing from Hojai district of Assam, rigorous imprisonment for five years and fine for their terror link on December 23.

Both are terrorists of Hizbul Mujahideen, and they were recruiting Muslim youth for the terrorist organisation in Assam. According to police sources, both were planning a blast at Hojai rail station and Geeta Ashram (regional office of RSS) in Hojai.

Jamunamukh Police Station in Hojai registered a case (124/2018 dated September 14, 2018) against the duo in connection with recruitment in Hizbul-Mujahideen (HM). NIA re-registered the case (RC-08/2018) on October 5, 2018.
Shanawaj Alam was arrested on September 13, 2018, as he had close connections with Mdohd Kamruz Zaman, a suspected terrorist of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.

After an investigation, NIA filed a charge sheet against five persons on March 11, 2019.

The case relates to Mohd Shahnowaj Alom alias Shahnawaj Alam’s arrest on September 13, 2018, for his close connection with Md Kamruz Zaman, a suspected terrorist of Hizbul-Mujahideen. It came to light during the investigation that Md Kamruz Zaman, Md Shahnowaj Alom, Saidul Alam, Omar Faruk and others had entered into a conspiracy to recruit members for raising a module of Hizbul-Mujahideen in the State.
