New Delhi: BJP president JP Nadda has announced West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as BJP-led NDA candidate for the post of Vice President of India.

Jagdeep Dhankhar is a “kisan putra” (son of farmer) who established himself as “people’s governor”, BJP chief J P Nadda said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, besides BJP chief JP Nadda attended the meeting.

In 2017, the party had named the then Cabinet minister M Venkaiah Naidu, a former BJP president and veteran parliamentarian, as its vice president candidate.

Dhankhar was born on 18 May 1951 in Kithana, a small village in the State of Rajasthan. He completed his school education from Sainik School, Chittorgarh and then graduated from the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. Dhankhar completed his primary education in Kithana Village School.

He was a member of parliament from Jhunjhunu (Lok Sabha constituency) in Rajasthan during 1989–91 in the 9th Lok Sabha, representing Janata Dal. He also was former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kishangarh, Rajasthan during 1993–98 in the 10th Legislative Assembly Rajasthan and former President of Rajasthan High Court Bar Association, Jaipur.

On 30 July 2019, President Ram Nath Kovind appointed him as Governor of West Bengal. He is the nominee of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance for the 2022 Election of Vice President of India as of now.
