“It’s made at the behest of the British to plunder people”: Outrage over Kerala Minister’s remarks against Constitution

CPM leader and state minister Saji Cheriyan mocked Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's role as the architect of the Constitution, and said, "The Constitution was written by an Indian at the behest of the British. Some 'stupid' and ‘silly’ things like secularism and democracy are written in the Constitution of India."

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Minister for Fisheries and Culture and CPI-M leader Saji Cheriyan has made insulting remarks against the Constitution, saying it has been made at the behest of the British to plunder the people of the country.

Cheriyan, a blue-eyed boy of Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan , said that the Constitution condones exploitation and was written in a way helping to plunder people of the nation and exploit the resources He was speaking at a political programme at Mallappally, in Pathanamthitta district.

“We all say that we have a beautifully written Constitution. But, I would say, the Constitution is written in such a way that it can be used to plunder the people of the country. I can say it anywhere,” Cheriyan said.

“The Indian Constitution is not fair to the working class as there is no protection for them and instead of that some ‘stupid’ and ‘silly’ (used Malayalam colloquial words like ‘kunthem’ and ‘kudachakrem’) things like secularism and democracy are written in it.

Saji has also insulted Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar by mocking his role as the architect of the Constitution. “The Constitution was written by an Indian at the behest of the British. It’s something which one allows for loot and nothing there for the labour,” Cherian added.

The BJP state leadership has demanded the Governor of the state to expel Saji from the state cabinet.

Speaking to Times Now, BJP leader K J Alphons said, “Cherian has taken oath to protect the Constitution and now he is ridiculing it. He must be sacked immediately by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan or the governor should recommend the CM to sack his minister.”

Saji Cherian is a legislator from the Chengannur Assembly constituency in Alappuzha district.

Why Communists condemn Indian Constitution? Here’s what Ambedkar said:

“The condemnation of the Constitution largely comes from two-quarters, the Communist Party and the Socialist Party. Why do they condemn the Constitution? Is it because it is really a bad Constitution? I venture to say no’. The Communist Party want a Constitution based upon the principle of the Dictatorship of the Proletariat. They condemn the Constitution because it is based upon parliamentary democracy. The Socialists want two things. The first thing they want is that if they come in power, the Constitution must give them the freedom to nationalize or socialize all private property without payment of compensation. The second thing that the Socialists want is that the Fundamental Rights mentioned in the Constitution must be absolute and without any limitations so that if their Party fails to come into power, they would have the unfettered freedom not merely to criticize, but also to overthrow the State,” said Dr B. R. Ambedkar
