New Delhi: Delhiites were shocked as the squally wind of 100 kmph speed swept across the national capital on Monday (May 30) afternoon and claimed two lives, leaving many people injured while trees were uprooted across the city.
At least two people were killed and several injured as heavy rain, accompanied by strong wind and thunderstorms, lashed parts of Delhi-NCR on Monday evening.
A 65-year-old homeless man was killed on Angoori Bagh Road after a tree fell on him. He was declared dead at the hospital.
Officials with the India Meteorological Department said this was the first storm of “severe” intensity in Delhi since 2018.
Strong wind accompanied by rain also dipped the mercury by almost 15 degrees at Safdarjung and other central and south Delhi stations.
IMD records showed that in 2018, such high-speed wind were recorded in the pre-monsoon season, May and June.
On May 13, 2018, around 109 kmph wind speed was recorded, sources said, while on June 9 (2018), Safdarjung recorded 96 kmph wind.
Eyewitness accounts said a large tree fell on the BJP MP Parvesh Verma’s car smashing the windshield.
Cable TV operations were badly affected in several areas of East Delhi.
